Romney, GOP suddenly plunging onto Democratic turf

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mitt Romney is suddenly plunging into traditionally Democratic-leaning Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and his GOP allies are trying to put Michigan into play. It's forcing President Barack Obama to defend his own turf - he's pouring money into television ads in the states and dispatching top backers - in the campaign's final week.
The question is: Why this Republican move?
GOP efforts in the trio of Rust Belt states could indicate that Romney is desperately searching for a last-minute path to the needed 270 Electoral College votes - without all-important Ohio. Or just the opposite, that he's so confident in the most competitive battlegrounds that he's pressing for insurance against Obama in what's expected to be a close race.
Or perhaps the Republican simply has money to burn. Use it now or never.

(18 posts)They are losing Ohio, and need to find an alternate route to 270. He has destroyed himself with his position on the auto bailout, and the whole Chrysler/Jeep fiasco has put the final nail in the coffin.

(26,045 posts)The Bushies did it in the last days of the 2004 campaign, making it appear they had internal polling showing Hawaii as a Republican pickup. Of course, it never was, but it made Kerry spend resources there that might have won the election if used elsewhere.

And he isn't going to get anything in Minnesota. If he is spending here, it's because he is worried about western Wisconsin, which gets Minnesota media. (Twin Cities, Duluth, Rochester broadcasts bleed into Western Wisconsin)

(2,730 posts)mentioned North Carolina. He is not leading in North Carolina. The place he is leading in North Carolina are from Gravis Marketing and Rasmussen. Three different Polls from three different organizations had the race in North Carolina tied. One from PPP,one from Civitas and one from Elon. Gravis Marketing and Rasmussen had Romney with a large lead. Another Polling organization had Obama up by three points in both of their Polling samples. PPP is Democratic,Civitas is Republican and Elon is independent. All three are instate organizations. Groves, Gravis Marketing and Rasmussen are out of state. Groves is a Democratic Pollster from Colorado. Gravis Marketing is Republican from Florida. Rasmussen is Republican from New Jersey.
In North Carolina's early voting, over 1,700,000 people have voted. President Obama has a significant lead in North Carolina's early voting just like Nevada,Ohio and Iowa. If that stands up until Election day, Governor Romney has some significant ground to make up. There are still over 2,000,000 Democrats have not voted yet compare to over 1,500,000 Republicans. Out of that 2,000,000 Democrats, over 1,000,000 are African Americans. THat is a sign much of the Democratic vote in early voting are probably brand new voters. THe overall registration at the North Carolina State Board of Elections show African American registration with over 100,000 new voters since 2008.
Therefore I think the Romney campaign is reading the math. They are probably not saying it but they probably are not sure North Carolina is in the bag. That is a state they thought they had. So they are scrambling in case they can't win in North Carolina.

(10,336 posts)outer coast of North Carolina was affected by Sandy but they will resume tomorrow. Early voting in North Carolina comes to an end Saturday. There is also a new Poll done by WRAL showing Romney with a five point lead right after those other three Polls. WRAL contracted USA Survey to do the Poll. This Poll also claims 60 percent of voters who planned to vote Tuesday plan to vote for Romney. It gave Obama a 15 percent lead in early voting from the people that already voted.
Well the Big problem with the USA Survey is the math just don't add up. Especially when you still have over two million Democrats and over half of that number being African Americans have yet to vote. The Republicans have cut into their overall registration numbers in early voting. There are only one million and a little over five hundred thousand left. There is no way Romney will get sixty percent of the vote on Tuesday when all those Democrats have not voted yet. WRAL can junk that quickie Poll. The Obama campaign thinks they can win North Carolina because of what they are seeing in the numbers.

(1,665 posts)Oh come ON. Raw-money's just trying another Rove trick from GWB days.
Anyone else remember Bush campaigning in CA right before the 2000 election? He was claiming to be sooooo confident that he could afford to campaign in deep blue states.
Turned out it was all a false front. Gore won the popular vote, and only lost the presidency on a vote of 5-4. It was shown to be a calculated move by Rove to make GWB look like the presumptive winner and get his hands on some bandwagon voters.
It's the same exact game today.
Raw-money's just trying to prop up the rapidly failing "momentum" narrative.
No worries folks. Just GOTV.
