Clinton says she is still on track for State Department exit

Source: Reuters (via YahooNews)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton says she still intends to step down as U.S. secretary of state sometime around January's presidential inauguration, dispelling speculation over reports she might opt to stay in the post amid numerous diplomatic crises if President Barack Obama wins re-election.

"It's really still my same time-frame," Clinton told the Washington Post in an interview published on Friday, repeating her plan to step down after one term even if voters on November 6 give Obama another four years in office.

"I'm aiming to leave shortly after the inauguration; that's my plan. But I haven't been able to sit down and talk to the president yet because he's trying to win an election, which hopefully will be finalized shortly. And then we will talk through how to do the transition."

Clinton won’t leave til successor in place

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has told President Obama that she will stay in office until her successor is confirmed, but said in an interview that “this is not an open-ended kind of time frame.”

“It’s really still my same time frame,” Clinton said, reiterating her intention to step down after one term even if Obama is reelected. “I’m aiming to leave shortly after the inauguration; that’s my plan. But I haven’t been able to sit down and talk to the president yet because he’s trying to win an election, which hopefully will be finalized shortly. And then we will talk through how to do the transition.”

Clinton was responding to news reports that she was considering staying on longer to deal with matters related to the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, which killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

The reports had set off a minor flurry of speculation that Clinton — among the most popular members of Obama’s Cabinet and still the most-rumored Democratic presidential candidate for 2016 — might be willing to remain for a partial or full second term if Obama is reelected. She has said repeatedly that she would serve only one term.

I understand it, it's an insanely demanding job. The hours are horrific, the demands and responsibilities are more than most of us could conceive.

Still, she's done an amazing job at it. It's sad to lose her. Even if I understand.

she's earned her retirement, I hope she just takes some time to figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life.

I'm sure she'll work with Obama to find the right person though. Ever since she started running for the Senate (I think in 99') she's been pretty busy. I really hope she has a chance to work on women's issues around the world. Human rights would be another very good cause for her to take up since she has experience with that as SOS. There is too much suffering going on many places of the world and greater advocacy is needed.

If he Brown loses this time, there is always a chance he'd run again when Kerry retires.

But I really hope that the president can talk her out of it. I can't think of anyone who'd be as good, unless it's Bill Clinton...
