LONDON (AP) - The scale of the child sex abuse scandal engulfing the BBC expanded on Thursday as authorities announced that 300 potential victims had come forward with accusations against one of the broadcaster's most popular children's entertainers and that others might have acted with him.
The scandal swirling around one of Britain's most respected news organizations also prompted a spirited defense from New York Times chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. of the paper's incoming CEO, the former top executive of the BBC.
In a letter to staff, Sulzberger said he was satisfied that Mark Thompson, who was the BBC's director general until last month, had no role in the decision to scrap an investigative segment about the abuse allegations against the late Jimmy Savile.
The well-known children's TV and radio host is accused of using his fame to coerce teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper and even in dressing rooms on BBC premises.

(5,061 posts)The only comparison would be if Dick Clark and Captain Kangaroo were one and the same person, a beloved media figure for generations, and turned out to be a pedo.
That being said, Michael Jackson was a much bigger star, and they have kept that stoiry quiet.

(14,738 posts)It's a full scale witch hunt, the only problem being that the witch in question is dead.
The main people getting it in the neck for this are the BBC, his old employers. There is an element of the BBC's enemies in the right wing press using this to go after them but nonetheless they do have some questions to answer.

(62,325 posts)Interesting that they waited until he was dead. This story is also obliterating the coverage of the Austerity disaster across Europe and the civil unrest that seems to be spreading.
Nothing like a sex scandal from decades ago to keep people distracted from what is going on right now.
I have no idea if any of this is true or not, but I have noticed it dominating the news in the British press for the past couple of weeks.

(14,738 posts)...I would say that it is very likely indeed that he was a major kiddy-fiddler. What I cannot understand however, is how none of this came to light when he was alive if he was abusing children on such a huge scale.

(66 posts)but nobody knew the sheer scale of what he did, nobody knew he was using the charity work that he raised money for to get access to children. As someone who grew up watching Jimmy Savile every Saturday night, saw his programmes about keeping children safe from accidents in the home and watch Top Of The Pops, it is deeply shocking. The fact that it did not come to light is a big question that was asked... The patients that he abused at Broadmoor said they would have been punished if they had said anything, other young girls were abuse by him in care homes and already considered untrustworthy. Also many were victims in the 60s and 70s when people did not talk about it and children were not believe, just like those that were abused by priests at that time.
I don't think this will bring down the BBC and news about the economy is still very prominent too

(66 posts)on his name for funds and he was a close friend of Margaret Thatcher apparently too when she was PM. He used to claim to spend Christmas Day at Checkers with the Thatchers and to be a close friend of both Prince Charles and Princess Diana..His had a Knighthood and a Papal Knighthood...He was given a postion of trust at top security Broadmoor home of some of the most notorious and hated criminals in the UK including Ian Brady and Peter Sutcliffe. He demanded to have his coffin filled with concrete so he must of realised that his past would be exposed after his death...His epitaph "It was good while it lasted" is seen by many as telling the world that he got away with it all. His grave stone was more grandiose than past Kings and Queens of England
This story has been dominant but they are still covering the US election, rising unemployment in Spain, cuts to welfare etc too. It is not a distraction unless you read The Sun, in which case you are under informed and being whipped up to hate the unemployed, the sick and disabled.
