Obama And The Moderator Call Romney Out For Libya Falsehood
BRIAN BEUTLER OCTOBER 16, 2012, 10:56 PM
In a defining exchange of the second presidential debate Wednesday night, Mitt Romney repeated a false claim about President Obamas reaction to the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya and got called out by the moderator.
The [P]resident just said something which is on the day after the attack, he went in the Rose Garden and said this was an act of terror. You said in the Rose Garden, the day after the attack, it was an act of terror? It was not a spontaneous demonstration. Is that what youre saying? Want to get that for the record, because it took the President 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.
In fact, on the morning after the attack, Obama addressed the nation from the Rose Garden and said, No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.
Both Obama and debate moderator Candy Crowley brought this to Romneys attention.
He did in fact, sir, call it an act of terror, Crowley said.
Can you say that a little louder, Candy? Obama joked.

(12,821 posts)If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the GOP will not be swayed by FACTS even when such are presented to them by way of what most of us call REALITY.
They may look surprised, indolent, or innocent, or act like they didn't hear you, but rest assured that at the end of the day, they'll just ignore you ("Well, that's your OPINION," they may chide) and then simply repeat the lie because it so sweetly supports their FANTASIES.

(1 post)He thought he had a home run. The moderator reminded him of an obvious fact and he looked like an idiot. Better do your homework Mittens before you debate.

It is unusual for a moderator to make corrections so she should have avoided it but it wasn't a big mistake.
Reading the transcript, used the phrase more generally rather than labeling a specific event. However, considering the context, it is clear he is using that phrase because of the attack.
Here is the key part
No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

if he wasnt referring to the attack in benghazi, why did he get off topic talking about acts of terror? makes no sense. he goes on to say four MORE (adding to the tally of our people killed in terrorist attacks). he calls it a terrible act, terrible meaning "causing or likely to cause terror." and act, obviously, the attack. they are in full spin mode right now. its complete bs. there is no plausible scenario where that attack could have fallen outside of the definition of terrorism, even if it were over the video, so it goes without saying. this is complete spin from republicans. if this is all they have on foreign policy, theyre doomed.

(57,936 posts)If someone had accidentally set a fire in the midst of a debate, you would probably not be able to get justice because you would not be able to point a finger at who caused the fire. It would not be intentional.
There was a lot of confusion, but the possibility that the act was terrorism was immediately raised. Fox News misreported this.
A video of the events was released soon after the attack, and based on that people stated that it was terrorism.

(57,936 posts)Fox meme. I corrected them. The day after the killing, Hillary and the President made it clear that there was confusion about what had happened in Benghazi because there appeared to have been some spontaneous sort of demonstration going on at the consulate in Benghazi that was a cover for the heavily armed attack.
We saw the video, and we saw the confusion at the consulate. But we also saw the truck with heavy guns and ammunition on it. That there were questions about what had happened and who was behind it were clear, but the message that it might have been a terror attack was never uncertain. The administration mentioned it right away. They also said, prudently, that they were investigating.
Fox News goofed big time on reporting this. That is the problem. They heard what they wanted to hear and not what the White House said.

What, you think people don't remember?
I'd post the links but don't care for the grief.
Wish this would just go away.

(57,936 posts)On the 12th, Hillary Clinton made a speech that told me very clearly that the scene in Beghazi either was both a demonstration and a terrorist attack or a terrorist attack.
We had agents in that country who had to get out.
Romney showed his complete ignorance as to how American intelligence has operated over the last 80 years. Sorry, but Romney and the Republicans made a mess of this. Romney needs to go home and read some history books. He probably won't stay a Republican if he does.
