Obama leads by two points in Arizona

President Barack Obama stands at 44% and GOP challenger Mitt Romney has 42% in the Rocky Mountain poll released Saturday. The margin is within the poll's sampling error. Poll: Presidential race close in Arizona (CNN):

With 11 electoral votes, the state has been considered to be leaning in Romney's favor.

The state's two most populous counties, Maricopa and Pima, came out in support of Obama, while Romney has a lead in the rural counties. Men are evenly split between the two candidates, and the difference between the candidates among women is only three points.

Obama is the heavy favorite among the state's Latinos, who split for him 77% to Romney's 10%.

The race between Democrat Richard Carmona and six-term GOP Rep. Jeff Flake to replace retiring Sen. John Kyl is also close, with likely voters split 44% to 40%. Former President Clinton lent some star power to the race when he campaigned for Carmona this past week.

The Rocky Mountain poll included 523 registered voters reached by phone between October 4 and 10, entirely after the first presidential debate. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 4.4 points.

Oh, my. That part of the state has been Republican since the Punic Wars, as I recall.

I grew up partially in Tucson, went to high school there. I recall in maybe 1964 one of my teachers (and this was when teachers tended to be VERY circumspect about their political leanings) remarking with some bitterness that the only reason Barry Goldwater kept on getting re-elected was because of the Republicans in Phoenix.

As an adult I lived four years in Phoenix and it was amazingly different from Tucson.

Anyway, Pima county I would expect to go for Obama. But Maricopa? Wow. Just wow.

8. Native Americans are helping Obama in Arizona. He's the first President to meet with all tribes.

I read on another site from an Arizonan that's part Native American that President Obama is the first President to meet with all the tribes there. Apparently, there's a larger population of them there than many realize because so many just assume they're Hispanic.

Apparently, in a 2010 census there were 353,386 Native Americans in Arizona.

I didn't think it would hit for another 8 or so years. This is great news!

What an interesting state. It has some of the most right wing folks in a slim majority but on their heels is a growing minority population and progressive white west coast transplants changing the mix. Can you imagine if we can take this state?

I need to figure out non-partisan races and judges before I mail it in.

Surprising he is ahead in Maricopa. Usually Democratic support comes from other areas like Flagstaff--Northeast and Tucson and the southwest portion.

19. Hope so, I'm in Tucson and already voted Obama

Got my early ballot last Friday, mailed it in Monday. I suppose I'm a triple threat; Hispanic, female, independent. OH and best of all I have previously been 47%, but my job search finally paid off and I have been a federal employee for well over a year now. So I guess government DOES create jobs. I don't really know anyone who is voting for Romney, in fact the night of the second debate i was at a friend's house. Her entire family, including her parents and siblings are all voting Obama. Her parents were disgusted at Romey's lies and behavior during the debate, and were yelling at the tv the entire time.

I honestly hope to see voter turnout in Maricopa county. Our poor state is usually dominated by all the out of state transplants in that area of the state, and we're sick of seeing it happen year after year.
