Romney says White House is ‘doubling down on denial’ about Libya attack

Source: Wash. Post

Republicans escalated their charges against the Obama administration for alleged failures in handling last month’s Libya attack, thrusting the death of the U.S. ambassador there into the center of the presidential campaign Friday.

Mitt Romney accused his rival of “doubling down on denial” about the true origins of the Sept. 11 siege in Benghazi, which senior Obama officials initially said appeared to be an outgrowth of anti-American protests, not terrorism. Whether the administration has truthfully disclosed what it knew about the perpetrators of the attacks became a flash point in Thursday night’s debate, when Vice President Biden blamed the administration’s shifting explanations on U.S. intelligence agencies.

“There were more questions that came out last night because the vice president directly contradicted the testimony of State Department officials,” Romney told supporters Friday at a campaign event in Richmond. “American citizens have a right to know just what’s going on.”

Earlier in the week, State Department officials had said that they had not received reports of protests outside the compound before the killings. But Biden said the explanation that the attacks grew from a protest — rather than from terrorists determined to hit the consulate — persisted “because that’s exactly what we were told” by intelligence officials.

From what I know, didn't the perps of the consulate attack use the Innocence of Muslims movie as a cover to distract the investigators?

That: 1. US officials in Libya never asked for more security at the consulate in Venghazi but instead asked for more security for our embassy in Tripoli. And 2. The Obama administration were simply telling the media and American people what they knew from intelligence officials as the info was coming into them after the attacks. There is no cover up here. WTH? Did Bush have all the facts 100% straight after 911? NO! The GOP and Romney should be ashamed of themselves. This is so sad!

The one that started the protest, and lead to the incident. Video is a powerful tool for good and bad.

That's a very old concept and is familiar to every military strategist. When events are happening quickly and are confused and frightening, it isn't possible to make out exactly what's going on. No different here.

Un-friggin'-believable.
This is the headline on the AOL news page:

BIDEN'S SLIP AT DEBATE IGNITES BATTLE
Controversial Statement Under Fire

Apparently:

Biden said in a debate Thursday night that "we weren't told" there had been requests for more security at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi ahead of the terrorist attack one month ago.

A State Department official testified before Congress on Wednesday that she had, in fact, refused requests for more security in Benghazi because the department wanted to train Libyans for the task. Another U.S. official testified he had argued unsuccessfully for more security for weeks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said that when Biden said "we weren't told," Biden meant President Barack Obama and himself. Carney said such security matters are handled by the State Department.

(snip)

"The vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of State Department officials," Romney said. "He's doubling down on denial. And we need to understand exactly what happened as opposed to just have people brush this aside. When the vice president of the United States directly contradicts the testimony, sworn testimony of State Department officials, American citizens have a right to know just what's going on. And we're going to find out."

What "slip"? What "controversial statement"? He didn't "contradicted the sworn testimony of State Department officials". This is all over what the antecedent to the pronoun "we" meant. The GOP laughably pretends to think it can only mean the entire Executive Branch

Republicans and AOL are just trying to make it look like Ryan didn't get his ass handed to him. (and Romney is getting his handed to him very soon)

Pitiful!

While this small scale attack left 4 Americans dead it is not much of a news story in the context of the widespread unrest throughout the Middle-East and adjoining countries. A single insider attack in Afghanistan often kills this many people. Hundreds are dying daily in Syria. Over 100,000 Iraqi's died in Bush's war of choice. The attacks on the marines in Lebanon killed hundreds and there wasn't this much of a stink. This is just one more thing Romney is throwing up against the wall in the hope that something sticks. This should have been, at best, a 2 day story. It is past time to put this story to bed.
