Obama Often Struggled In Debate Prep, Had To Cancel Sessions

Source: TPM/New York Times

President Obama alternately performed well and poorly in his debate prep sessions leading up to Wednesday night's debate and had to cancel or cut short prep sessions due to his busy schedule, reports the New York Times.

Like other presidents, Mr. Obama’s debate preparations were hindered by his day job, his practice sessions often canceled or truncated because of events, advisers said. One session took place just after he addressed a service for the four Americans slain in Libya, leaving him distracted…

Advisers had seen two presidents during practice debates, one who had been listless and passive two nights before and another energetic and aggressive the next night. It turned out the former was the one who showed up in Denver…

Mr. Obama’s alternating performances left aides walking off Air Force One in Denver looking worried.

He's got a rather important day job. And I don't think he was that bad in the first one. I'm not letting the over-the-top media bashing convince me that Romney's fllim-flam shape-shifting entitled him to be declared the winner over the steady, calm, serious President who actually delivered real substantive information as opposed to Romney's non-stop lie-fest. The President will be ready in the town hall format of the second debate which will favor him over Romney's empathy problem with ordinary people, who will be asking the questions.

Those who wish can declare Rmoney the "winner" all they want. Let them have their little moment in the sun, if it means so much to them. Rmoney's "win" hasn't really changed anything for Prez Obama except that it may have caused some GOP financial backers to continue giving to the Rmoney Black Hole instead of diverting funds down-ticket to Senate and House races.

And that's just fine with me.

Commander in chief, head of the Democratic party, leader of the free world.
So many hats and so little time. Like trying to keep Syria and Turkey
from getting into a shooting war.

While " WEASEL" has not had a job in 10 years and can spend as much time as
he wants practicing his lies at one of his exclusive lakeside mansions.

Obama; tired but presidential.
Mittens; deranged and obviously "HIGH" on something.....maybe too many red bulls,
even though such a thing could prevent him from becoming a GOD in his next life (a mormon thing).

Fuck the right wing corrupt media.....Obama won, period!

who does or did debating, they will tell you that a person who uses a Gallop style is the hardest to debate. It's about respect for that person, you just tune out. I know it's seems odd,but that will happen. This is were the Moderator comes into play,he or she must shut this type of style down and stick to the subject at hand. Notice Leher is pleading the fifth. The real whores are yet to come,it's about their egos and the D.C. cocktail circuit. These folks are 1%ers guys.

he was distracted by serious issues. he is that type of person. he knows debates will be important but his mind is still on the serious issues he is dealing with every day.

while the other guy has been practicing for months and yet still had to lie and came off as an asshole boss type . and came off very unpresidential.

we're going to have a bully, self-righteous Mormon, take-no-prisoners jerk in the oval office. You haven't lived unless you've had Mormon children appear at your door nicely extolling the virtues of Mormonism and telling you they're right and you're wrong--which is exactly how Mitt The Shit handles everyone. Of course Obama was taken aback. Now he knows. He'd better cancel appts. and figure out how he's going to stop the bullying before it starts and call the Jerk out for his fairy tale lies. I've watched this Jerk squirm when he realizes he's been exposed. It's beautiful. Obama has to hit hard and fast. The Jerk will be ready.

But he has to take this thing seriously.

We all know what the situation is.

1-He bombed in his first debate and has lost ground in the polls.
2-He's got to bounce back in the next 2 debates.
3-The ONLY way to bounce back is to prepare extensively, even if it means letting someone else handle some of his Presidential duties.

If Obama wants to be re-elected he'll do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal. He's up against an opponent and a political party that will sink to any depth to win. I know President Obama is a nice guy, but as Leo Durocher said, "nice guys finish last."

but we don't "all know" the situation as you see it. It's a little more complicated than that.

And... the president can't just turn over his responsibilities to someone else. That's one of the difficulties of being the most powerful person on earth.

and.. Leo Durocher was a ball player, not a political strategist in the 21st century.

I'm not trying to undercut your devotion to the president, I just disagree with your argument.

Flippant name calling suggestions because of one article and the way that you interpret it, just so you can get your jollies when people (yes there are real people who type this stuff in, what i am writing right now just doesn't magically appear) get upset? I hope not, because of course, i never make assumptions like that

What i like to do, Before I open my mouth, is look at people's past comments that way I can find out if they are trolls, or anti-whatever i want to make a comment about, how about that? Next time it will take you 1 minute to find out about somebody before you decide to be rude.

I actually thought this article was fairly positive because it put Obama in a very human light. And I think that it makes Obama look fallible as well, Which will position him nicely for the next debate and lower expectations. If you follow campaigns, the campaigns themselves don't always like to paint there Candidates as superheroes, matter of fact, the Obama campaign, Spends quite a lot of time humanizing Obama and not making him look like a superhero which is Something that the right likes to do.

And on another note, even though I think this is a positive article, occasionally, I will write things that are open-minded and not so positive, if you look at the articles from the folks who manage this website, And read some of the posting from people that have been here for over 10 years! Even their articles are not always positive, do you Call them anti-Obama?

I've experienced people with attitudes like yours before on this website, sometimes I wish that DU had a forum called "Salem Forum, for Angry witch hunters who like to waste everybody's time"

The good thing is you always have a way to ignore posters on DU, I just looked at your profile and there is a way for me to hide your posts if I want to, Obviously you can also Hide-mine, instead leaving comments Like you did next time. I am not going to hide you yet, but I'm assuming that you will probably hide me, either way we'll figure it out. I personally like the see as many voices as possible, it would've been nice if you would've left a comment with your opinion, but without the name calling?

say about my President. He has had our back since day one. He is a man of substance and I support his policies. Obama is so tight-lipped, it may be years before we know what he was really dealing with the days before the debate. However, once again I enjoyed his debate performance. All I saw mittnocchio doing was lying and pretending. The real mittnocchio was in that video we saw of him talking to the 1percent about the 47%.
