House intelligence panel warns against two Chinese firms
Source: Los Angeles Times
WASHINGTON The federal government should view with suspicion attempts by two Chinese telecommunications companies to expand in the U.S. market because of a strong risk that they would aid spying and cybertheft by China, a yearlong investigation by the House intelligence committee has concluded.
In a 52-page report accompanied by a classified annex, House investigators working for Democrats and Republicans said that Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp., two private companies with deep ties to the Chinese government, had failed to satisfy security concerns...
The report recommended that the U.S. government bar the two globally dominant firms from access to any sensitive U.S. networks and from acquiring U.S. assets. The companies make routers, switches and other parts of the worldwide telecommunications nerve system...
House intelligence committee chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and ranking member C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) appeared on CBS 60 Minutes Sunday to discuss their inquiry. ...

(924 posts)Only a fool would believe that Huawei and ZTE have nothing to do with China military.
Would China subcontract Raytheon to build their civilian air traffic control system? Would China purchase aviation electronics from Lockheed Martin for their aircraft?

Why do we have to buy telecom products from these companies who are the master of intellectual property thefts? (from Cisco, Juniper, Lucent Tech - now Alcatel-Lucent). To save a buck or two while risking national security? If this is not the ultimate penny-wise-pound-foolishness, then nothing else is.

The concern is completely valid.

(924 posts)China, and "so-called" democratic Russia are NOT like us and other Western countries governed under the rule of law and transparency.
Let's not be naive in dealing with them. China governing body is laughing at us as stupid Yankees whose system can be manipulated and exploited.
This is not against China as a country, but until China is a democracy like us, we have to be very careful dealing with it.
Don't forget that we ourselves were guilty of the same imperial arrogance several decades ago with covert subversive activities abroad, setting up banana republics, overthrew any guys we didn't like and installed puppets we liked. Had we invaded Iraq in the 50's, would we have respected their democratic process and accepted a guy who were not friendly to us? More likely we would have installed someone like the Shah of Iran.
We are still reaping the wrath of the world manifested in anti-Americanism throughout.
Back to the topic, we must not compromise national interest and security and China is NOT a country to be trusted, until they change the system of government.

(137 posts)I see every day where the things and parts come from.
Most companies are very good at hiding the true origin of what they are selling and can make it look like the US Gov is buying American Made, however people like me who are actually concerned about were the tax dollars are spent, take a minute or 2 and do a quick internet search and find the true orgin of a part.
Case in point US Company X sells a mil spec bolt to US Gov for $1 however the true origin of the bolt is China and is sold for $0.03, I can also find what factory it was made in and who the factory manager is with his direct phone number.
I inform the higher ups and no one cares.
That is waht we are up against.
