Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg reported hitting a deer with his car on Saturday night but actually killed a pedestrian whose body was not found until the next day, state investigators said Monday.
Ravnsborg's office has said he immediately called 911 after the accident and did not realize he had hit a man until his body was found. The Department of Public Safety issued a statement Monday that said only that Ravnsborg told the Hyde County Sheriffs Office that he had hit a deer and did not say whether he reported the crash in a 911 call.
The man, who was identified as 55-year-old Joseph Boever, was not found until Sunday morning.
Republican Gov. Kristi Noem had revealed Sunday that Ravnsborg was involved in a fatal crash and said the Department of Public Safety was investigating, but neither she nor the agency had provided any details about what happened.

(7,633 posts)The old, I thought I hit a deer excuse. Bullshit, he was drunk and fled the scene. Even if you actually hit a deer, you would stop to check the damage and see that it was a deer.

When was the last time you were driving and couldn't distinguish between a pedestrian and a large animal?

(1,990 posts)If you are on a road where you are not expecting people to be - and hit something - it would not be out of the ordinary to think you hit something else like an animal. Given the time or conditions, one may not even stop.
That being said, the pessimist in me says he was drunk.

(35,320 posts)It must have been 10 or 11 pm, with others in the car. We were talking.
Talking, I saw a flash of something and a crunch. We ran over it, whatever it was. It was rainy, and while there wasn't a dent there also wasn't any blood. Can't imagine there couldn't of been.
They decided it was a dog. That seemed reasonable at the time to me, the stupid kid in the car. I wasn't driving.
Now it seems completely unreasonable. Dogs aren't that common 20 miles from a town near no housing, up in the mountains where off the right side it's mostly just "down" and the left side has brush sprouting at eye level because it's all "up".
So, not a dog. Raccoon, I guess. Yearling black tail, perhaps. "Person" doesn't come to mind. Without having gone back to check, there'd be no way of knowing (and no safe way to go back and stop on the curvy mountain road with scant shoulder). Didn't follow the news and there'd be no reason for any cops to check on the Portland-registered car that hit the critter.

(23,148 posts)You pull over at the first safe opportunity to inspect damage. Youll see fur stuck to your vehicle in most cases. You dont just keep driving. Thats insanity.

(62,423 posts)There is no way to tell how bad the damage is without stopping and checking it over.
Plus there is the insurance aspect. They usually like to have some police check the situation out to verify your story when you try to get the car fixed.
Just had a little run in with a deer about two years back.

(59 posts)Accidentally hit a mule-deer a couple of years ago up here in the great
Bananaslug Sanctuary, Howling Wilderness portion of CA. The unfortunate creature
limped off into the woods afterwards, but hopefully survived. Lots
of deer fur stuck onto the car, nose prints smeared on the windshield
and a slight dent in the passenger side fender, so I imagine poor Bambi
fared much, much worse for that than we did.
You have to be pretty damn drunk/high/stupid to not know the
difference between running over a biped and a quadruped...
especially one that may have had effing antlers!!!
Gaaaahhh!!!!

She's drunk, hits and kills a person, she goes to cop boyfriend, who goes to great lengths to cover it up. Pretty wild show.
Very good series. 6 episodes per season (British calls them series' instead of season)
Though it is the start of rutting season and the bucks will attack cars on the highway. A niece of a former supervisor was killed a couple of years ago driving a busy highway at twilight. Rutting season is a dangerous time when you drive, usually around daybreak or twilight. Rutting season usually ends around the end of November or first frost.
Do a search on cars hitting a deer pics - the deer usually will take out an entire front end if you hit it.
If you see a deer on side of the road, drive toward the deer because it will try to cross the road when they see you. Barely escaped hitting a deer but the driver I was with was very skilled and knew what to do. We came so close...
