Senate Democrat calls for end of recess amid warning about mail-in ballot delays

Source: The Hill

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), the chair of Senate Democrats' campaign arm, called for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to cut the August recess short over warnings that mail-in ballots this November may not arrive in time for the election.

Cortez Masto, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), cited a warning from the United States Postal Services (USPS) about "inconsistencies" between its delivery service and state deadlines for receiving and counting mail-in ballots ahead of an anticipated spike in mail-in voting this year in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

"It's unacceptable that in the United States of America, the Postal Service has to warn Americans that their ballots may not be counted if they vote by mail," Cortez Masto said in a statement released by the DSCC. "Mitch McConnell should end recess, return to Washington, and work to pass the bipartisan emergency funding needed to provide urgent economic relief, combat this pandemic, and ensure the Postal Service can operate in a safe and timely manner."

The call from Cortez Masto comes amid a flood of warnings from Democrats that changes implemented under USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will impact delivery times and possibly hinder the timely delivery of mail-in ballots later this year.

Yes, that's the contact form for McConnell. I know what you're thinking: What's the point?

Tell him to get the Senate back into session and save the USPS.

Tell him your personal story of why you need the USPS to function smoothly. You can do like I did and leave out any mention of the election or ballots. You can even fib and say you're a Republican. You can tell him you are incurring late fees from bills you didn't pay late. Or that you are in voluntary lockdown due to the virus and dependent upon the USPS for medicine and food.

It can't hurt and it takes thirty seconds.

Senate back in to session? Or are they at the mercy of Moscow Mitch? Of course Mitch is holding things up on purpose because he knows that historically Republicans do better in low turnout elections. And hobbling the Postal Service could result in making it harder to vote by mail therefore reducing turnout. But if we could just get the Senate back in session perhaps a few Republicans like Romney and Collins might break ranks and join the Democrats to help fund the Postal Service. Then of course we could face a Trump veto but we would have to deal with that if and when it happens. But for now we need the Senate back in session.

Go ahead and send the letter - the turtle will ignore and laugh about - but every Democratic senator needs to go to Washington and begin having meetings. Televise and publicize the meetings. The news media will show up. Start bringing in postal workers who are seeing the delays. Start having testimony from veterans who are not getting their medicine. Video testimony from soldiers in battle sites not getting their home mail. Small business owners who are impacted.

Just don't sit and wait for the corrupt and cynical republican senators to show up.

And Nancy Pelosi needs to get representatives back to do their job too.

Call your Dem Senators and tell them:

JUST GO BACK TO THE SENATE.
Go back to DC.
Hold sessions — just for Dems!!! — in a hotel ballroom if you must. Invite TV stations!

In other words, act like YOU are doing the job, Dems.
Don’t let McConnell dictate the news cycles.

Dems should seize control of the media cycle by doing this. It’s a sin they have not done it. Call your Senators and tell them!
