(CNN)The US Postal Service will stop taking letter collection boxes off streets in Western states following accusations the removals would further limit some voters ability to send back mail-in ballots.
The change came after CNN and others reported on Friday that the US Postal Service has started reducing post office operating hours across several states and removing letter collection boxes, according to union officials.
In a statement Friday night, Rod Spurgeon -- a USPS spokesperson for the service's the Western region -- told CNN that the service will stop the removal of letter collection boxes in 16 states and parts of two others until after the election.
That means, according to Spurgeon, the USPS will stop collecting the letter collection boxes only in: Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Alaska, Nebraska and small parts of Wisconsin and Missouri.

Only "western states", no mention of any other states. And can we believe them anyway?

(10,131 posts)Same with the sorting machines (those that haven't destroyed yet)
But then the war on the USPS started during the George W administration with the unrealistic funding requirements for their pension program. Rump is batting clean up.

(6,941 posts)This is a CLEAR voter suppression because of the US Senate race here. Trump and Republicans know that Democrat Barbara Bollier can win that seat. WHY the hell else would the USPS remove a sorting machine and now drop boxes in Wichita/Sedgwick Co??
Anyone remember what Republicans did to try and stop Democrat Laura Kelly from becoming our Governor in 2018 out in Dodge City? They tried....didn't work.

(22,292 posts)it was on Election Day only but Abbott's proclamation to move the runoffs to July and add an extra 5 days to the early voting period also included the rule change on dropping off ballots.
STILL HAVE TO SHOW ID though

(47,774 posts)The removal of the mailboxes is visually traumatic to most people, it summarizes what Trump is doing to our Postal Service. There is something frightening and sinister about it.
Every day you think it can't possibly get worse, but Trump manages to exceed all expectations. There is no bottom with him.
My town is not huge, good size yet not huge. I live a mile+ from the post office. The town hall, a mile away is where we vote and I can drop my ballot if I choose to do so. Never a line to vote.
MA has sent ballot requests to all registered voters in the state. They are giving us the option.
Yes, there is no bottom. Let's vote that demented fool out.
PatSeg
(47,774 posts)We have to request mail-in ballots, which all worked out fine. I'm in a small town now, so voting is rarely a hassle. It is cool that MA automatically sent out the requests to registered voters. I wish all states would do that.
When I lived in California, you could have mail-in ballots sent automatically every election until you either moved or opted out. They made voting so easy in California.

I've only been in New England for ten years, so I still feel like a newbie. Most of my life was spent in the Midwest, the Chicago area. Meanwhile, I'm very close to the Massachusetts border!

Nah, ten years makes you a New England'er. Born and raised here in MA...and no I don't have a Boston accent.

(47,774 posts)came from New England, so I've spent a lot of time virtually in New England, while working on the family tree. I was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and no I don't have a Chicago accent!
My daughter-in-law is from Massachusetts and she doesn't have an accent either, though her father does. This is a small town, so I'm optimistic that the ballots won't be slowed down too much. The primary came surprisingly quickly being it was during a pandemic.

(6,941 posts)They need to run ads over and over telling people DO NOT set on your mail in ballot when it arrives. SHIT...fill it out that day and mail it back that day or the next day.
I did so in the Kansas Primary and my ballot would have been there at least 3-4 weeks before the cut off date.

(19,208 posts)Those boxes will never be returned to their rightful place, and the sorting machines have already been destroyed. It's a fait accompli. Trump and DeJoy have already successfully altered the election in Trump's favor. People can complain, there can be all sorts of mea culpas, but sorry to say, it's too damned late already.

The various regions are shown there. CA and AZ are one region. The rest of the West is another region. Texas, OK and LA are another region.
I had to look pretty hard to find it but I knew it had to exist somewhere. Every government entity has a district or regional map of some sort.

(703 posts)Why is one political party allowed to destroy what the US constitution created?
We wouldn't let them tear down buildings we paid for with our taxes...why this?
Protect us from enemies both foreign and domestic. Well there has never been a clearer
example of a domestic enemy than this administration.
If one of our branches of govt. acts unilaterally without control or oversight of the other
two branches then we need the other two to get some balls and save our democracy.
Is there anyone who knows the law better than this to step in and do what's right.
The destruction of the US Postal Service needs to end now!!!!!!!!!!!
This is more critical than anyone knows.
