USDA to buy $30M in shrimp to aid Gulf seafood industry
Source: AP
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) The Gulf of Mexico seafood industry is getting help from the federal government.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it will buy $30 million worth of shrimp from Gulf Coast fishermen in an effort to stabilize the industry.
The announcement comes after Louisiana and Mississippi officials called for federal assistance over fears that the price of seafood could collapse because of an excess in product amid the pandemic, news outlets reported.
This is a step in the right direction for helping the seafood industry and Louisiana shrimpers in particular, Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said. This will help keep our shrimpers in their boats and in business. However, we still have work to do to get our entire seafood industry the assistance it deserves.

Even this many years later, I still have a moment of pause when it comes to gulf shrimp. For shrimp in general, I love 'em, but don't often partake since the industry is incredibly destructive to bottom dwelling ecosystems.

Sometimes our tax dollars go to things that don't benefit us personally, but do benefit others. As long as actual people are benefiting from this, as opposed to Trump's cronies, I'm fine with this subsidy.

(794 posts)But the states lobstermen arent celebrating. Thats because the area Trump aims to reopen is 130 miles southeast of Cape Cod far beyond the reach of Maines day-boat lobstermen. This doesnt help the Maine fisherman at all, Leroy Weed, 79, who has had a lobster license since he was 10 years old. Most of Maines lobstering takes place within three miles of shore, and dont typically travel more than 30 miles offshore.

Usual Donnie bullshit. A total mirage meant to the rubes, not the lobestermen. Then again, I wonder how many in the lobster industry voted for Donnie, particularly in the 2nd District?

(3,076 posts)... I was reading just a couple of days ago concerning what is posted in this sub thread about extending the lobster fishing zones down to Cape Cod area, that the tariffs killed the Chinese demand for U.S.A. and namely Maine lobsters. 40-50% drop in prices because of glut?

(36,053 posts)It's ominous. I don't like to remember Cheney's "food is a weapon," but the way some right wing capitalists work, class war using food becomes another front in changing a democratic republic into a corporate campus (plantation).
Another reason not to trust this administration and its paper towel approach to our economic disaster.

(6,181 posts)Look at Trump's ridiculous help the Lobster industry. He is reopening fishing grounds Obama closed.
The Lobstermen and women are laughing the grounds Trump reopened are 123 miles SOUTHEAST of Cape Cod.
Lobster fishing is a day trip out before sunrise in dark. NO Lobster boat could or would make the 123-mile trip. 250-mile round trip.
What is killing the Lobster industry is Trump's Tariff wars with China and disputed waters between Canada and the U.S.

She is really, really, really concerned.
Watch the documentary the real long-range problem is global warming. The waters to the south of Maine are to warm for the lobsters. At the current rate within 20 years Maine waters will be to warm and all the east coast lobsters will be Nova Scotia Canadian fish.
