Trump signs $3B-a-year plan to boost conservation, parks

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump signed legislation Tuesday that will devote nearly $3 billion a year to conservation projects, outdoor recreation and maintenance of national parks and other public lands following its overwhelming approval by both parties in Congress.
There hasnt been anything like this since Teddy Roosevelt, I suspect, Trump said, seemingly comparing himself to the 26th president, an avowed environmentalist who created many national parks, forests and monuments that millions of Americans flock to each year.
Supporters say the Great American Outdoors Act is the most significant conservation legislation enacted in nearly half a century. Opponents countered that the money isnt enough to cover the estimated $20 billion maintenance backlog on federally owned lands.
At a White House bill-signing ceremony, Trump failed to give Democrats any credit for their role in helping to pass the measure, mispronounced the name of one of Americas most famous national parks, blamed a maintenance backlog that has been decades in the making on the Obama administration and claimed to have deterred a march to Washington that had been planned to tear down monuments in the nations capital. No such march was ever planned.

(25,250 posts)For the last 3 3/4 years he's done everything he could to undermine the environment and our lands.
In the last couple of days - he announced reducing the prices of prescription drugs and now this with his $3B plan.
He's going to use this as his accomplishments as the president.
Unfortunately - it's 'too little too late'. We're on to you Donny. It won't work. You're going to lose in November.

(5,227 posts)this is a good cause. But! Shouldn't he concentrate on the current financial situation we're in?

(343 posts)People crowded around Trump. No social distance. Some not wearing masks. Trump without a mask. The poor little girl there, no mask. I saw it live, and he handed her a pen after he signed the thing. I was sitting there, thinking he is screwing off doing this while he should be in 24/7 overdrive on the pandemic. He should be meeting with medical professionals, governors, working on a national strategy. But no, he is doing this nonsense where he gets up, lies, and then signs something. This is what he does with his time, that and play golf.

(20,875 posts)The people that worked for HCRS (Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service) ended up becoming employees of the National Park Service!
The reason is because it was deemed to be "not necessary".

(20,875 posts)Heritage Conservation & Recreation Service was at one time an agency that operated under the auspices of the Dept. of the Interior (c. 1970).
They were using surplus Federal lands and developing them into parks and the like.
HCRS as it was known was abolished during the Carter administration.

This is really nothing "new" and yes, there was something like this before!

(33,345 posts)What's he going to do, veto it? He doesn't give a fuck about Federal Lands, or National Parks (he's probably never been in one beyond those in DC), and had nothing to do with the legislation.
But he knows how to take credit and ruin the moment with partisan attacks and lies.
