California governor says COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, trending down

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The rates of new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions were all trending downward in California in the latest counts, the governor said on Monday.
Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said that despite that good news, the state's Central Valley agricultural region was still being hit hard by the coronavirus. He said the data had yet to reach a point for lifting pandemic restrictions.
"This virus is not going away," Newsom said at a daily coronavirus briefing. "It's not going to take Labor Day weekend off or Halloween off or the holidays off. Until we have a vaccine we are going to be living with this virus."
California, the country's most populous state with some 40 million residents, has recorded a total of 514,901 confirmed COVID-19 infections and 9,388 deaths, according to the governor's office.

The problem is that California is huge. It has over 33 percent more people than the second most populated state, Texas. Many people think that California is uniformly blue, but it is not. California Republicans are among the most right wing in the entire nation. Devin Nunes is from California as Kevin McCarthy, the House Minority Leader.
I predict as the rate of case growth slows, you will start to have Freedom Works once again agitating with folks threatening health officials and demanding that the lockdown end. In other words, whenever California starts to slow the rate of growth, this just fuels right wing claims that COVID-19 is a hoax. They may be a minority, but in a State as large as California, we probably have more right wingers than many "red states."
For example, Wyoming has a total population of about 500,000, which would not even get it in the top 5 largest cities in California.

For Davey, a resident of the city of Huntington Beach in southern California, the requirement to wear a mask to curb the spread of coronavirus is not something he takes seriously.
"It's a hoax," the 51-year-old told AFP as he exited a clothing store maskless, referring to a state rule that people in most public places wear face coverings.
"The more you test people, the more you come up with new cases," he said, echoing words from President Donald Trump as he attempted to explain the record number of infections recently recorded in California and several other states.
Davey is not the only resident of this city in Orange County, which has a large Republican presence, to revolt against lockdowns and mask rules.

(51,559 posts)Sometimes I feel like I live in a red state. The aggressive idiocy of California Republicans is infuriating. The Republican-dominated Orange County Board of Education wants to open schools without masks and is suing our governor to be able to do it.

(51,559 posts)I'm sure my first winter in Wyoming would have me crawling on my hands and knees back to California.

(17,387 posts)...as Fresno, CA. Yup, not Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego or San Jose.
That being said, Wyoming has some beautiful back country and it was nice driving through on the way to and from Yellowstone.
