Paul Ryan Promises Focus on the Family that He Will Fight Gay Equality

Source: Right Wing Watch

During an interview with Focus on the Family president Jim Daly, Paul Ryan reassured the anti-gay group that a Romney-Ryan administration will fiercely oppose gay rights. Focus on the Family and its founder James Dobson have a long history of promoting anti-gay policies and ex-gay therapy, and earned a shout-out from Romney earlier this week while campaigning in Colorado, where it is headquartered.

Ryan: It’s the foundation for society and for family for thousands of years. First of all, Mitt Romney and I — I’ll just say it, it’s worth repeating — we believe marriage is between one man and one woman, that’s number one. Number two, you know where I come from we had one of those amendments in Wisconsin, I was a big supporter of it and we passed it like you say, where it’s put on the ballot it passes. The second point is, President Obama gave up defending the Defense of Marriage Act in the courts, I mean, not only is this decision to abandon this law the wrong decision, it passed in a bipartisan manner, it is very troubling because it undermines not only traditional marriage but it contradicts our system of government. It’s not the president’s job to pick and choose which laws he likes. A Romney administration will protect traditional marriage and the rule of law and we will provide the Defense of Marriage Act the proper defense in the courts that it deserves.

'undermines traditional marriage'. Why does anyone give a flying fuck who someone else chooses to love and marry? How in the world can this be construed as harmful to hetero marriage?

Is this what they mean by smaller government?

they cannot say they are against gay marriage because they detest gays so they have to come up with a less rabid-sounding "reason". What better reason than it is a threat to the "real", "legitimate" marriages of, you know, people like Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh.

That is not what is in the family tradition of the Rmoney family.

After all, it was his grandfather that even felt compelled to leave the United States for Mexico so that the Rmoney men could practice polygamy.

It is also interesting to note the "one man and one woman" is NOT a biblical tradition, either. Abraham had two wives, right? And Solomon had multiple wives and hundreds of mistresses. So where is this "foundation" for marriage that goes back "thousands of years"????

Of course, most of the Bible in fact contradicts modern society and specifically the modern conservative ideology, but cognitive dissonance is what allows that party to continue.

I never get that line - what the hell is there to protect it against? You want to protect "traditional" marriage? Figure out how to het the 50% divorce rate down.

Same sex marriage/unions have no effect one way or the other on hetero marriage.

same sex couples are not trying to stop traditional marriage, but the opposite is true of some in traditional marriages.
Who one commits their life to, only concerns those who are making the committment. Traditional marriage is only threatened by the participants in divorce, what ever happened to the "death do us part" vow.

I CANNOT in a million years, see how this impacts MY life or the lives of straight people, period. This can only appeal to the those with too much leisure time on their hands and boredom in their lives to be concerned about it.

Because it's a NON-ISSUE. It's about paper and certain privileges given to someone NOT about taking ANYTHING away from those not affected. It will NOT change the lives of straight people, because they're not going to suddenly turn gay from equality, anymore than changing color.

It just makes our nation true to its principles of equality. What's wrong with that?

Like the women's health issues. Where the hell do these people come to believe it's necessary to get so involved in OTHER people's lives?

It's not like they are going to lose any money or have to take responsibility, so where do they get off on this?

Some may call it the result of religion, but I don't. I call it a boat load of people who have nothing better to do than indulge their egos by screwing around with other people for cheap thrills.

JMHO.

How do they keep getting away with calling this "defense of marriage?" They're not defending anyone, all they are doing is BLOCKING marriage for a significant portion of the population. If you're that offended with seeing men kissing each other or women kissing each other, move to Iran! I thought Republicans were all for "freedom," but I guess that is just short for "freedom to force everyone in America to be like I am: an old, homophobic, angry, and bigoted male."

I used to tell them when it came to picking a life partner, race didn't matter, ethnicity didn't matter, gender didn't matter, religion didn't matter so long as the two of you were compatible that way. The main thing, I always said, was that you treat each other with dignity and respect. Oh, and keep it within the species.

The GOP wants only their faith, their notion of family and their freedom protected.

They would have the government choose which religious marriages to recognize.
They would decide how to define your family for you.
They define freedom by what they think is acceptable.

Paul Ryan is not fit to be Vice President or even to hold office here in the United States. How can this man take the oath of office and raise is right hand to the United States Constitution.

Seems to me that traditional marriage has big time failed since men and women divorce, assault and kill each other and even abuse their children. Now we in the United States believe you have the right to believe in what you want but you cannot tell other citizens what to believe in.

So as the Vice President you just cannot discriminate and on top of that be intolerant to how others think.

So as far as I am concerned I cannot vote for any citizen who believes in your views and thinks he can be Vice President or then again maybe VP of Iran.

No I sure am not a Navy Vietnam Veteran that can vote for a GOP candidate.
