Florida passes 5,000 coronavirus deaths, with 90 more reported Saturday

Source: Tampa Bay Times

The state also recorded another day of more than 10,000 new coronavirus infections, and 433 hospitalizations.

More than 5,000 people in Florida have now died from the coronavirus, with the addition of 90 deaths on Saturday bringing the total to 5,002.

The number comes after four consecutive days where coronavirus deaths surpassed 100. The weekly death average decreased slightly, from 101 deaths per day to 100.

The state also recorded 443 additional hospitalizations, one of the largest increases since the pandemic began. The only days that recorded higher numbers were Wednesday and Thursday. That followed a two-week stretch starting early July during which the number of hospitalizations increased day after day. As of Saturday, the average daily hospitalizations for the week had reached 375.

On Saturday, Florida recorded 10,328 new infections. The daily positivity rate was about 12 percent. The number of people infected with coronavirus over the four-and-a-half months since March is 337,569.

The state’s high for single-day coronavirus cases in Florida was 15,300 infections, the most of any U.S. state on any day. Irregular testing has led to Florida having some days with more than 100,000 tests processed, and others with about 50,000 tests processed, according to the Florida Department of Health report. On Saturday, the state reported 90,000 tests processed.

I wonder whether Republicans will start arguing that testing not only causes more increases in cases, but that it can also be deadly.

the up-coming tourist season, at all? This being their off-season could be the best and only time to get things under control. Maybe Florida isn't as seasonal as it used to be, but without the service industry, what does one do for work there?
