CHICAGO Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Friday that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan must resign if allegations of corruption are true against the fellow Democrat long considered the states most powerful lawmaker.
Madigan, who also serves as chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, denied wrongdoing through a party spokesperson, who said he received subpoenas for documents Friday morning.
He will cooperate and respond to those requests for documents, which he believes will clearly demonstrate that he has done nothing criminal or improper, spokeswoman Maura Possley said in a statement.
Federal prosecutors said electric utility ComEd has agreed to pay $200 million to resolve a federal criminal investigation into a long-running bribery scheme that implicates Madigan. They say the company has admitted that from 2011 to 2019 it arranged for jobs and vendor subcontracts for various associates of a high-level elected official for the state of Illinois."

I have a friend deeply enmeshed in the Cook County Democratic Party. Madigan has been known to be an issues for years.

(30,749 posts)half the Democrats I know are deeply enmeshed in the Chicago Democratic party. I am downstate. In Illinois, one is either a Chicago Democrat or a downstate Democrat. It does not matter if you live fifty feet south of the Wisconsin border, you are still a downstate Democrat.
Rauner, our erstwhile republican governor, nearly ruined this state. Madigan was the only thing standing in the way of Rauner turning us into a right to work state. Also, Madigan held out against Rauner when he tried to do screwball things with the budget and would not pass a budget for several years.
Madigan is, whether people realize it or not, one of the most powerful Democrats in the country. When Karl Rove was pulling his dirty tricks, he told his minions to stay away from Illinois. Because of Madigan, that stuff does not fly here.
Of course the repiggies would like to bring Madigan down. I will wait and see.

(15,338 posts)I think this guy should resign as soon as Donnie Dipshit does.
I also think he should be as cooperative with investigators as Dipshit Donnie's cabinet officials.
I think I'll wait until after the November election before I start cleaning my house. Yeah, there's surely some dust under the bed, but right now the kitchen is on fire.
When it compares to what PINO has done, we'll talk.
In the meantime, hold firm!

(33,643 posts)Been saying this sort of thing since Northam ... which I was somewhat pilloried for at the time.
Anyone still upset that Northam didn't step down?

(1,351 posts)Living in IA with IL 100's of yards away I read a lot about reich wingers HATING Mike Madigan (and his daughter, I think). They must be powerful Dems to earn so much vitriol from the lunatic fringe. For that reason alone I hope he stays.

I am NOT calling Madigan corrupt. I am simply laying out my utter hatred of Repukes.

(65,097 posts)Don't resign based on allegations.
It's only an allegation.
Pritzker said "if", yes.
The corollary is that he should not resign until proven.
We went through this when Franken was railroaded. That should not happen again.
