President of flight attendants union says it's 'absurd' masks aren't mandated

The international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA believes it's "absurd" that the Federal Aviation Administration has not mandated that travelers wear masks on all flights during the pandemic.
Sara Nelson spoke with Hoda Kotb on TODAY Wednesday about the importance of the government issuing a uniform mask policy, as some airlines have mandated wearing a face covering while others only recommend it.
"It is absurd that the FAA has not done this yet, that DOT has not taken a leadership role here," Nelson said. "On Sept. 12, 2001, (after the terrorist attacks) there were changes to regulations and security. And here we are, well into the spread of this virus and still no mandate from the federal government, still no plan from the federal government. We absolutely need that backing from our government."
The coronavirus has devastated the airline industry, with passenger volume down 71% domestically. Airlines are trying to assure passengers that it's safe to fly, which Nelson says should involve making all passengers wear masks with clearly defined rules for their safety and the health of the flight crew.

I thought you were required to wear a mask on flights by federal law but that's not the case. Many airlines will require or highly recommend you do wear them.

If the FAA mandated it, it would give that airline rule more teeth, like having the person arrested on landing as with other safety violations.

(6,008 posts)I usually fly Delta and avoid American Airlines, due to the routes I normally fly and prior experiences with each. Each of their behaviors during the pandemic reinforces those preferences. About the only other thing I could ask from Delta would just be to stop food and drink service entirely.
