Mayor de Blasio holds off approving police reform legislation following outrage from NYPD brass
Source: New York Daily News
NEW YORK Originally planned for signature on Tuesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio is reviewing a package of police reform bills including a chokehold ban, following angry backlash from police department leaders who said the legislation would weaken cops amid a major spike in crime.
At the end of a Tuesday public comment session on the police reform measures and three unrelated bills, de Blasio signed the latter but said he would approve the former at a later date.
While the mayor often signs legislation immediately after public comment sessions and he said Tuesday that the police reforms mark a watershed moment for our city he sometimes waits a few days to seal the deal.
This weeks delay comes after Police Commissioner Dermot Shea on Monday slammed the chokehold ban as insane, saying, Police officers should not have to worry more about getting arrested than the person with the gun that theyre rolling around on the street with.

(95,252 posts)Police officers employing violence in the name of the state damned well ought to worry about getting arrested when they engage in murderous behavior.
What is insane is the insistence of police that they ought to be above the law, above any consequences for brutal and abusive behavior. So long as that is maintained, brutal and murderous behavior by police will continue. So, for that matter, will perjuries intended to 'exonerate' abusive officers, and to 'justify' clearly illegal searches and seizures.

(3,256 posts)it's not like TV.Most cop time is spent on petty misdemeanors and complaints. Every trade I worked at was more dangerous than being a cop. I don't think my millwright card allowed me to give chockeholds.

(19,204 posts)organized crime syndicates. They make it so you can't discipline a police officer for anything. That's why there are so many sub-par police officers in just about every police department in the country.
