State Sen. Jennifer McClellan launched her campaign for Virginia governor on Thursday, bidding to become the first black woman elected governor in American history.
The 47-year-old lawmaker, one of two African American women who have announced their candidacies in the 2021 election, is making a timely entry into the Democratic primary.
As issues of race in America have been pushed to the front of mind for more voters, at least four black women have drawn mention as vice presidential prospects for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. One of them, Stacey Abrams, narrowly lost her 2018 gubernatorial bid in Georgia.
Black womenone of the Democratic partys most influential voting blocsare also seeing their numbers grow in Congress and state legislatures. According to data from the Center for American Women and Politics, 24 black women serve in the U.S. House of Representativesan all-time high--and more than 300 in state legislatures.
