Navy to ban Confederate flag, symbols from its bases and ships
Source: the hill
The Navy is planning to ban Confederate flags from being displayed on any of its installations, in a move that comes after protests swept the nation following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis.
Admiral Michael M. Gilday said in a statement on Tuesday that he directed his staff to begin crafting an order that bans the flag from "all public spaces and work areas aboard Navy installations, ships, aircraft and submarines."

(17 posts)...for the Confederate flags captured in battle that are held in the Naval Academy's trophy flag collection.
There's no current pictures online that I can find of them, but photos of the flags when they were preserved in 1912 are in this book

The flag on page 88 looks suspiciously familiar to the flag waved by neo-confederates and their ilk.

The Confederacy were traitors to the United States of America. Over 360,000 US troops were killed defending the United States. We do not honor traitors.

(66,462 posts)In the barracks, on bumper stickers, you name it.
A buddy of mine from Basic Training shared a barracks room with one of those 'The South with rise again!' types, with the flag on full display on the wall of their room.
My friend is Filipino, and was understandably hurt by the explicit white supremacy message of the flag. I would sneak into the room from time to time when Traitor Boy wasn't there, and leave anonymous Post-Its on his flag, talking about how if the South ever rose again, we'd kick its ass again, that kind of thing.
My friend suspected it was me doing this. When we met up again about eight years ago, he thanked me for looking out for him, even anonymously. I wish now that I'd been more brazen about it. Doing it anonymously was a little cowardly. The slavery and segregation supporters were many, and they brooked no dissent.

Not habitually I hope. Was there an incident, or is this just to be on the safe side?

(2,122 posts)I served from 69 to 72, and saw many of them. The Navy back then was full of unreconstructed rebels. When they told me, "The South will rise again", I replied, "Yeah. Shit floats."

Should of been ban then, should be ban NOW.

(3,660 posts)His former wife Marla Maples, he referred to her family as dumb southerners. Southerners think Trump likes them, but he thinks they are rubes and rednecks and has no real use for them. It's kinda sad really, but maybe Trump is right. Maybe they are dumb. Or as tRump would call them useful idiots. Southerners have always voted for people that have largely worked to keep them down and many of them poor, if after all this time they keep voting for Republicans they will continue to reap the hate they have sowed.
