Ryan: Gun owners should fear an Obama re-election
Source: CBS News
COLUMBUS, Ohio Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan courted the votes of hunters on Saturday in a speech to a sportsmen's group, suggesting that President Obama would seek to strip gun owners of their rights by appointing judges hostile to a broad interpretation of the Second Amendment.
"I shudder as a gun owner ... what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again?" Ryan asked aloud during a speech to the National U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance's 16th Annual Save Our Heritage Banquet here.
"The next president is going to pick a lot of judges. The next president will appoint a lot of different judges and these are lifetime appointments. If you want to make sure that judges respect our Second Amendment rights, you need a president who respects those rights as well," he said.
Ryan likened gun ownership to religious liberty, suggesting that the federal government had intruded on people's First Amendment rights as well. He also stressed the importance of appointing people to government agencies who will "respect the rights of hunting and fishing," and said that the widely criticized Fast and Furious gunwalking operation "would never occur under a Romney-Ryan administration."

(743 posts)around here. Out of all the biggest issues our country is facing gun ownership and the fear that a Democratic President is going to ban ownership of guns is the biggest concern I hear about most where I live. It is sickening how this fear resonates with the people around here.

(743 posts)Also I have family that live up in the mountains in Virgina as well and this kind of mentality is spread rich and thick all through out the area up there as well. It is sad to see people will vote for Rmoney out of this made up fear but never see or understand that by voting for that moron they are shooting themselves in the foot since most of these people I know are on social security disability and food stamps.

(5,764 posts)In my opinion, for many, the gun issue is a surrogate for racism. It doesn't have to be rational. It only needs to provide an excuse to express their hatred.
Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)And I'm speaking as a pro-gun type. I never before saw so many people who used to put other issues before the gun issue suddenly become paranoid gun nuts since president Obama even ran for office. I've seen it with quite a few in my union workplace. Another way I can tell they're full of shit is that they can't debate issues for shit beyond their low-information paraphrasing of sound bites, and when you one by one knock them down on their totally misinformed arguments, it seems, almost without fail, they try to appeal to me...use their trump card...with the gun issue.
I am having 2 good and long time friendships very much strained over politics now. When I was still a republican, 2 of my friends supported Clinton twice even though he was an avowed anti-gun president. Though they didn't like his position, they still voted for him over Bush and Dole because they cared more about economic/labor issues more. Now that they're both fairly comfortably retired, they've become wingnuts. One way asshats they are.

(15,036 posts)he tells me sales have been driven the past four years by irrational fears and paranoia. Even in Obama's first year, the driving concern was "Oh, yeah, he and Biden haven't done anything yet, but they will -- it's only a matter of time." And well before Ryan started lying' the gun shop customers were floating this same fear -- "Yeah, once he's free of reelection fears Obama will start to take our guns."
My friend agrees it's irrational, indeed it's downright crazy, but he's employed and it keeps the ammo manufacturers working overtime, so he sees upsides even in the absurd.

You know who should be scared if you and Romney are elected? Anyone that isn't filthy rich. Anyone that is over 65. Anyone that wasn't born to a wealthy family. Anyone with a job.
Now Obama has no plan to take away people's guns that I know of. You and Romney have every intention to screw the poor to help the rich.

(50,560 posts)So let me see here...to get guns Banned By The Courts Obama would have to...
pick a judge who hated guns, like the wife of Ronald Reagan's press secretary...of course, you'd have to ship her to law school quick, but it could happen
get this judge confirmed in a Senate that's half full of Republicans
hope like hell a gun case came before this judge
get the case decided in a way that grabs all the guns, like Obama apparently wants to happen
and have the decision affirmed by a majority-Republican Supreme Court.
The reality of this situation is you're more likely to lose your guns under Romney than you would under Obama...because you will probably have to sell all your guns to buy food and make your car payment after Romney ships your job to China.

I told him I would bet him $1,000.00 that if Obama is reelected that in four years he will still have his guns. And that during that time Obama will not do anything to try to take away guns from lawful owners....He turned down my bet. Yet he's so sure Obama wants his guns.

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

The shooter in MN struggled with mental illness for years, his family sought professional help regarding his paranoia, and yet he was able to obtain a Glock and thousands of bullets. And after the shooting, few people, certainly not Obama, have said anything about gun control.

http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=29603
The Gun Control Act was passed that year with bi-partisan support, and it remains our most important gun control law. There is little controversy about it - The NRA helped write it, and has never voiced any real opposition to it.
In the aftermath of President Nixon's resignation, the Republicans struggled to build a new coalition that could hope to achieve a majority of votes in a national election. They made the fateful choice to pander to the burgeoning far-right religious extremist movement that was spurred by the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.
Abortion has been the GOP's biggest albatross. Two small gun control planks in the platform, added to appease an extremist but highly vocal minority among is, are ours. If we were to embrace the right to keep and bear arms as a valuable choice for individuals and ditch those items, there wouldn't be any discussion of a close election.

(7,042 posts)NONSENSE.
More rhetoric and fear pandering from gun enthusiasts.
Hundreds of people in the last few months brought loaded guns to airport security check points in a post 9/11 world, many of which went off accidentally at the airport and we are told to believe they are law abiding citizens whose second amendment rights I need to defend. The gun lobby lives in the same alternative universe as the GOP. Common sense says we need common sense gun laws and that includes banning guns where people drink and pray......oh and also where they fly. COMMON SENSE!
fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)The GOP panders fear. God forbid we should invision a world without guns. I am HAPPY to wish for that world.

(2,983 posts)You know, I'm one of those democrats that strongly supports Second Amendment rights. No, I'm not a gun cultist, gun nut, gun fanatic or anything of the sort - I don't even own one. I just believe in the right of every American to be armed, if they so desire, for hunting and self defense.
That said, there is nothing that Obama has said or done that would lead me to believe he's interested in taking away gun rights. At some point, he may attempt to promote and/or legislate stronger gun control laws, which even a lot of gun owners are in favor of. That's not taking away your guns, Ryan, you idiot. It's attempting to ensure that they are more strictly regulated (which they really need to be) - and laws that would lead to the greater likelihood of responsible use would be great as well (mandated gun safety courses for any would be owner, for instance).
That said... WHAT THE HELL do guns have to do with religious liberty? In any event, Sir, please go hunt lions with a stick.
