Carmel Mayor Brainard backs off plan to sue Minneapolis over costs associated with riots
Source: Indianapolis Star
Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said Monday night he is putting on hold plans to pursue a lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis.
Earlier Monday Brainard said Carmel had retained outside legal counsel to pursue a negligence claim against the Minneapolis Police Department. Brainard pointed to the costs Carmel and other cities have sustained of responding to the resulting riots and looting following protests over officer-involved killings of black men and women.
"My intent was to send a message that their negligence cost many lives and millions in property damage across the country," Brainard said in a statement. "America has a long history of correcting behavior though the legal system and I felt this would be another opportunity to do so."
Brainard said the idea was not about bringing further harm to the people of Minneapolis.
