Senator Amy Klobuchar to be vetted for Vice President

After months of breathless speculation about who would make the cut as Joe Biden's Democratic running mate in the presidential race, CBS News confirmed Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar has been asked by Biden's campaign to undergo vetting for running mate consideration.

Biden's choice of running mate is considered ultra important because of his age -- 77 -- and because he has hinted that if he wins he plans to be a transitional president of only one term. That would set up the vice president in a prime position to be the next president of the United States.

Requests for information from potential running mates for Joe Biden is now "underway," according to a senior source familiar with the process. Other names in the mix have long been Michigan's Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Kamala Harris, among others. He committed early on to choosing a woman as his running mate, and many have urged him to pick an African American.

Previously, Biden has said this list of politicians he is considering numbered around a dozen. CBS News also confirmed New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen was asked but declined to move forward with the vetting process. Florida Rep. Val Demings confirmed today she was asked to be vetted and reports indicate New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan was as well.

I believe that she would be a great pick. She'll help the rust belt and hopefully carry my state of Ohio.

3. She would be my first choice!

There are many very qualified women candidates...but you have to also consider what is lost by having them give up their current position in politics. As well, one has to consider what is being gained with them on the ticket.

With Senator Klobuchar, she is vacating a senate seat that will temporarily be filled by another qualified Democrat. At the point where her seat would need to be elected, chances are very good her seat would be confirmed by either that temporary senator, or another Democrat.

The real plus is that her policy positions were very close to VP Biden’s. She will strengthen his hand immensely. She is a Midwesterner...and she appeals to Midwesterners. She wins in red districts.

And finally, she is sharp...very sharp, and she is intelligent and capable of being President one day.

There are others, but in my humble opinion, Senator Klobuchar makes the most sense.

4. Hard pass here. Too many skeletons regarding her temper and her treatment of her staff.

Before you come at me with well it would be ok if she were a guy, well, no it would not. If the stories are true there is probably more than one person who would be willing to come forward with information. Many women have had a difficult woman boss. We don't need the distraction. To my knowledge the stories have not been disproved. Won't stop me from voting for the ticket just not my first choice or second or third....

5. I would question the decision of choosing someone who gained no traction in the primaries

Better to choose someone who has name recognition (Tammy Duckworth, for instance) but hasn't lost in the national arena.

It is not just because she is my Senator. Our governor has many fine replacements for her is she is the VP pick. Her seat is safe.

Look at her credentials. Biden could not make a better choice!

I have support for several, minor doubts here and there. On this night, I think there are only 2 or 3 that I'm aware of, unless Biden goes with a governor or former office holder, such as Susan Rice. Amy, Liz, Kamala. That's it. Amy and Liz are my two top picks. Both of them can bludgeon Trump, belt out a good speech, hosted many events. Both have great strengths. Liz is older, softer spoken, perhaps a tad quicker of mind. As a professor, she's more elite and more vulnerable to screams of "socialism!" Neither have a regional accent. Do you go with a northeast ticket? Maggie Hassan, Elizabeth Warren? A midwesterner to hopefully bring the heartland?
