The White House is preparing an executive order which will require certain essential drugs be made in the U.S., sources told CNBC on Thursday.
One of the sources told CNBC's Kayla Tausche the order could come out as soon as Friday. The applicable timeframe for a review will be 90 days, the sources said.
The administration has a wide-ranging supply chain effort underway for products in a variety of sectors seen as national security issues, including drugs, medical supplies, semiconductors and defense equipment.
This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

(43,281 posts)So funny how they focus on the big money items. But we can be deep-sixed by the absence of simple parts like filters, seals, washers, motor brushes, relays, etc.
But hey, it's great they're letting everyone including foreign countries know that we're in a tight spot!!

I've been 'buy in the USA' before anyone here had heard of a particular junior senator from Illinois.

actually address "core" government functions, that is, things the government should keep "in house" and do for itself. Unfortunately, usually when the decision-makers decide they want to outsource a function, they find a way to do it. A perfect example is IT development and support. You want that capability to be in house because it's critical to every agency to do its job, but it's been outsourced. I myself would use the CFR to go further than Trump and order that federal gov't have its own capability to produce drugs if necessary. This is what Sen Warren suggested, iirc, in her plan to have any drug that was developed using federal tax dollars also be owned by the federal govt.

(3,164 posts)I've always thought a good model is for the government to develop drugs and technologies, release the information into the public domain, and then use the (ostensibly) 'free market' to compete to keep prices low. Most drugs cost very little to manufacture; I wear hearing aids that cost several thousands of dollars, which probably cost 50 cents to actually make, the rest being proprietary technology.
Develop this stuff and then allow CVS or Walmart to make their own cheap version without worrying about anything other than QC, and nothing should cost more than 10 bucks a month.

(17,956 posts)Umm, no. Ain't happening. Cost too much. Tied up in court for ages and ages. Plus, you can't transition that on a dime. It would take years even if he's able to prevail in court.
Defense related electronics? Broken clock moment. Some components are produced overseas by potential adversaries. A really dumb situation we've found ourselves in. Domestic production is so tight to nonexistent, some defense contractors have had to vertically integrate into the basic electronics industry. Particularly those in super critical systems.

(9,426 posts)can profit from, surely? Kushner likely has family investing in these companies that he will promote. There is ALWAYS an angle to anything this administration does, always.
It's pretty obvious that the whole thing is BS and leads to great corruption. You really can't do favors for a Chinese company but you can certainly fill up the campaign coffers through corrupt deals in the USA. Thats not to mention possible kick backs. If these assholes don't do hard time it will be another nail in the American coffin. Anybody that thinks these people would ever do anything for the good of anybody but them selves is deluded.
