Mixed messages and martial metaphors: Trump sows confusion about how to reopen the country

Source: MSN

President Trump calls himself a “wartime president” and favors martial metaphors when describing the coronavirus pandemic, but as shown with his about-face this week on whether Georgia should start reopening businesses, the commanding general’s orders to the troops can, at times, be clear as mud.

Trump has issued contradictory advice to Americans and contradictory or inchoate directives to governors, mayors, Congress and the scientists who flank him at daily news briefings intended to showcase his leadership. Much of the confusion surrounds when and how to lift safety restrictions that have closed businesses, schools, parks and casinos as a means of slowing transmission of a virus that has killed more than 40,000 Americans.

On Thursday, the day before barbershops, nail salons and other businesses were to reopen in Georgia over Trump’s objection and against the advice of the task force he empowered to guide the national response, Trump spoke glowingly about states that are reopening.

“You see states are starting to open up now, and it’s very exciting to see,” Trump said at the day’s televised briefing. He did not mention Georgia, whose Republican governor he called out by name on Wednesday as moving too fast to reopen.

It is like Trump and Fox News are playing a game of red light, green light with the entire country with thousands of lives at stake. They must feel like gods being able to cause thousands of people to die on a whim.

It is still my view that this is about a deliberate attempt to destroy coherence. That is, to confuse and then condition the population in preparation for what is to come.

This is a crisis. It brings with it much uncertainty. Usually, a good leader or leadership, etc., would be there to bring coherence and unity as well as assurance and assistance. That's not what is happening here, of course. In fact, it is the opposite.

Now, you can cover that up with all kinds of assumptions about personality disorders and incompetence, but that is how confidence men work and I think it is a ruse. Some probably believe Trump is the great stable genius, but those folks are just a lost cause for a democracy. We might tend to fall for the fool he plays, but my sense of it is that there is a scheme behind it.

That's just my take from what I have seen from that whole side of the picture, (Trump/GOP/RW Media).

I await the General Election because, if any of my assumptions are correct, then all the pieces Trump's devious mind has put out should come together for his final blows or some sort of end game.

Proposed national policy:

Before reopening, there should be the following national restrictions until the population can be effectively vaccinated.

1. All Americans should wear mouth/nose masks/coverings whenever they leave their homes, unless they are able to maintain a minimum social distance of 6 feet.

2. All food preparation business should require their employees to wear mouth/nose masks/coverings while working.

3. Restaurants should not reopen (except for take-out / delivery) until the population can be effectively vaccinated.

Do you agree?

Masks until there’s a vaccination? Kill me now. No restaurants until there’s a vaccination? We won’t have any left to open.

Anybody who wants to can take whatever steps they deem necessary, but we can’t keep restaurants closed that long.
