Biden to announce VP selection panel by May 1

Source: The Hill

Former Vice President Joe Biden said he plans to announce the members of a selection committee who will help choose his running mate by May 1 as speculation continues to mount over his vice presidential pick.

“We’re going to probably be announcing the setting up of that committee, which we’re doing now, between the people who have agreed to serve on it, and we will be announcing the formation of that I assume by May 1 we’ll have that done,” he said on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” early Wednesday morning.

Biden added that the committee will likely take until July to narrow the hunt for a vice president down to the top three contenders.

Announcing his selection committee would officially launch Biden’s search for a running mate, though speculation has already exploded as to who he could pick after he vowed to select a woman for the role.

In these dark days, we need someone with the intelligence, experience, and integrity to be a help to Biden and to step up in case he became ill for any reason.

Yes, she's a woman, so she fills that prescription, but, on the whole, I don't like to choose candidates just because of race, gender, etc.
Just pick the most qualified person. I think she is that person.

appointee could serve, including conceivably to no time depending on when she sent her notice of resignation and the date she planned to last serve. This was all carefully examined back in 2016 when she was being considered for HRC's running mate.

As for MA voters replacing Ted Kennedy with come-from-behind anomaly Republican Scott Brown, they replaced him with Warren herself at their next chance. After what the Republicans have been doing now, probably little danger of their electing a Republican?

I'm sure Warren's again at least on Biden's very short list. Also that Biden doesn't need anyone to tell him who he wants to work with, but rather to vet candidates and investigate and advise on issues like this.

I trust Biden to go with someone he has rapport with, which sort of implies a Senator he's known while in the Senate or as VP. A dark horse might be a retired Senator, or even a governor that interacted with him in the Obama Administration. That's where I can't quite get my head around Governor Whitmer as his choice. She's a ticket-balancing selection to grab Michigan, don't know if he knows her well. But like everyone else it's just my speculation, so make a solid choice, Joe! Pick us a winner!

Might think Kamala, Amy or Gretchen Witmer are already in the 3 most likely choices at this point. Any one of them would be a great pick and they are all relatively young to balance out Joe’s age for those who want a young VP to step in if Joe has health issues or dies.

Elizabeth Warren would also be an outstanding choice and although she’s not as old as Joe, she is going to be 71 I think when they take office. Not a reason to not pick her, but something to consider.

... does not make his choice from among any of the former candidates. I believe there are good reasons for this.

1. There are some candidates who I believe will bring little or nothing to his campaign.
2. There are several candidates that would better serve the country, and themselves by staying in the positions they now hold.
3. There are several candidates who would be ideal choices for key positions in a Biden Administration.

There are several women outside of this group who would be qualified for the position. He has plenty of time, and I am sure he will do the proper vetting before making a choice. If it were up to me, and I had to make that choice today, I would probably lean towards Val Demings or Gretchen Whitmer, giving Demings a slight edge.

We don't need another Tim Kaine on the ticket. (No offense to Kaine who is a solid Democrat and a good person, but he was 100% the wrong choice in 2016)

But NOT for Veep!

She is much better off in the Senate right now, where we need her to keep fighting the good fight for us all.

I also believe that whoever is chosen to be Veep should also be younger, even though Warren is an extremely youthful 70-year-old. In 2024, she will be 74.

I wanted Elizabeth for President: nothing less. She was, is and will always be Top-of-the-Ticket material.

I also would like to see someone other than ANY of the Dem Senators who were primary candidates.

I love Warren, she was my first choice, but I do understand the risk.

The last time someone a Massachusetts senator was plucked from the ranks, they ended up with (R) Scott Brown.

The governor (though he's done a good job) is a republican. Would he appoint the position or a special election?

Harris is okay and you know that California would replace her with another democrat.

There is always a committee that researches the records of potential VP Candidates to lessen any surprises. Remember when Biden said he was vetted 10 different ways by the Obama committees..

They have a panel of trusted people recommend and vet potential choices. The candidate of course decides which it should be but the ground work is done by a commitee. You want to make sure whomever gets to be the running mate is thoroughly vetted.

what he was to Obama. A completely trustworthy friend and experienced assistant president who can handle a heavy portfolio.

Only Biden can choose that person. A committee can vet and examine and advise on political advantages/disadvantages and legal issues. Such as establishing that Warren's seat would almost certainly go to a Democrat and that a Republican appointee would have little time to cause trouble.

I think Warren would be perfect to head up turning some of the huge domestic problems created by Republican devastation and neglect into big advances. Whoever he chooses will be a strong person.

Witmer for VP - Biden does not need someone to help with passing legislation, he was in the senate for 30+ years. Having someone with the executive experience to take over the job on Day 2 if something catastrophic happens is important.

Harris for AG - She can help shape law enforcement nation wide and it puts her in a good place for a later run for president.

Rice for SecState - She has great diplomatic and national security chops, but no election experience. This is the job she has been working towards her whole career.

Warren for Senate Majority Leader - Puts her in the best place to put her agenda forward and to ride herd on all democratic legislation.

Find places in the Administration for Beto, Pete, Abrams, and others to grow future party leaders.
