Georgia to allow some shuttered businesses to reopen amid pandemic

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

Gov. Brian Kemp outlined plans Monday to allow some businesses shuttered amid the coronavirus pandemic to reopen by the end of the week, as he starts to ease restrictions that have ravaged the state’s economy to stem the spread of the disease.

The governor’s order will allow gyms, bowling alleys, salons and some other indoor facilities closed under his shelter in place order to resume operations by Friday as long as they comply with social distancing requirements and meet other safety standards.

And restaurants, which were banned from in-person dining, will be allowed to reopen on April 27 if they meet guidelines his office will release later this week. Theaters will also be covered by those new standards. Bars and nightclubs will stay shuttered.

“These are tough moments in our state and our nation. I hear the concerns of those that I’m honored to serve,” said Kemp, who said Georgia’s drastic measures helped ease the pressure on the state’s healthcare network.

I live in Georgia and I know someone who has symptoms and received a test last Thursday. She still has no results because they are so far behind in testing. WTF How in the hell can you open back up when people with symptoms can't find out if they have it. Republican lawmakers will end up killing more citizens because they don't know how to govern and put profits over people.

Bring out your dead?

Oh, it will be great. Fine. Fun. Exciting. Open! At least, for a couple weeks until the Mother of Waves breaks out.

Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow, (or a dozen or so of them) we may, (very possible) die.

I live in Georgia, too, and if ANY of the hair salons I'm connected with put their people in harm's way, I'm boycotting them and badmouthing them and encouraging all my friends to do the same.

This reopening isn't about the workers, who really really really don't want these anti-science idiots breathing virus all over them. It's the fascists who want this.

Fuck these people sideways with a shovel.

But getting food to people and providing supplies to fix household emergencies are critical functions. People in those jobs should be protected and compensated. (They aren't, but they should.)

Getting a root touch-up isn't worth anyone's life, the stylist's or the customer's, and any business owner putting their stylists in harm's way is an asshole.

If every third seat or table or fitness equipment is empty; you’re running at 1/3 occupancy; is this even profitable?

The overhead and payroll; is it even worth it?

Many restaurants found that even the curbside only option wasn’t profitable and forced to shutter to save costs on utilities; payroll; taxes etc. after giving it a shot. How will opening to seat the same amount of people you served curbside be profitable?

They’ll push unrestricted commerce far too soon after taking this ‘soft opening’ to the public when retail determines it isn’t enough...

We could have prevented all this; two months ago. But alas; here we are.

We’re in for the long haul now...

I live in No. FL. and on the radio yesterday the personalities on Sports Talk were all just going crazy, talking about a trip to GA to work out at the gym, get their hair cut and have a meal at a restaurant. One of their on-air personalities had CV19 and was in ICU for 5 days, and this is an athlete with no prior conditions. Fucking idiots. I turned back to music.

(Tom Bossert is the former Homeland Security Adviser to Trump who took pandemics seriously, and was then sacked)

Georgia's #Covid numbers don't meet the 1st gating criterion. Cases trending up @GovKemp, if disease transmission picks up after a rush to lift interventions, GA would pay the full cost of interventions w/out the benefit, esp. if you return to lock down. ~18k cases, 726 deaths.
