US relief checks begin arriving as economic damage piles up

Source: AP

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER, PAUL WISEMAN and KELLI KENNEDY

WASHINGTON (AP) — Government relief checks began arriving in Americans’ bank accounts as the economic damage to the U.S. from the coronavirus piled up Wednesday and sluggish sales at reopened stores in Europe and China made it clear that business won’t necessarily bounce right back when the crisis eases.

With many factories shut down, American industrial output shriveled in March, registering its biggest decline since the U.S. demobilized in 1946 at the end of World War II. Retail sales fell by an unprecedented 8.7%, with April expected to be far worse.

The world’s biggest economy began issuing one-time payments this week to tens of millions of people as part of its $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package, with adults receiving up to $1,200 each and $500 per child to help them pay the rent or cover other bills. The checks will be directly deposited into accounts or mailed to households in the coming weeks, depending on how people filed their tax returns.

Among those receiving a check was Jacqueline Gonzalez, a 32-year-old single mother who was laid off from her job as a bartender and lives with her mother, a teacher, in Miami Lakes, Florida. Gonzalez paid her car insurance and gave her mother $500 for rent. She has signed up for food stamps.

but alas, no stimulus money with it. Guess I'll have to wait another month now, if I even get it then. Trump's and the GOP's "streamlined" form of government doesn't seem to be working very well, and a lot of people in this country are going to crack up if Trump doesn't start doing something correctly pretty damned soon. There aren't even any banks open to rob!

Is you last name close to the beginning of the alphabet? If they are, I'm screwed there, too. It always sucked in life to be in the back of the alphabet.

I have to have all food, etc. delivered now.

No more trips to several different stores to save $$$.

I'll be on food stamps by the time this is over if ever! That's if food stamps even exist!

My wife and I conferred, and decided that if the intent was to stimulate the local economy, that's just what we'd do.

We placed an online order at our local co-op brewery for 3 crowlers (essentially, these are 2-pint cans filled to order) and 1 growler swap/fill (you can bring an empty and swap it for a reduced price on a full one - which they then steam sanitize and fill for another customer).

Then we added a $50 tip for the beertenders, who have been doing a great job with the place closed for all but pickup orders. (We also added a note in the comments section of the online order form noting that the tip amount was NOT a typo, just in case.)

When we walked to the brewery and picked up our order the person doing the fills was almost in tears with appreciation. Stimulus success!

(Breweries in Washington state have been deemed 'essential businesses' under our current stay-home order.)

Got my SS on the 3rd, as usual.

Does anyone know how they decide who gets it first?
Is it alphabetical, or 'what'?

Whitmer said she was “really disappointed” to see protesters close together without masks.

“I saw someone handing out candy to little kids barehanded. ... We know that this rally endangered people,” Whitmer said. “This kind of activity will put more people at risk and, sadly, it could prolong the amount of time we have to be in this posture.”

But my bank's web site is not working and a trip to the bank would be an unnecessary trip.
