Barr says 'draconian' lockdown measures should be reexamined by May

Source: The Hill

Attorney General William Barr late Wednesday suggested that the federal government in May should begin relaxing some of the "draconian" social-distancing restrictions imposed throughout the U.S.

Barr said in an interview ... that the U.S. had to be "very careful" to ensure some of the measures being "adopted are fully justified, and there are not alternative ways of protecting people" amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

"I think, you know, when this — when this period of time is — at the end of April expires, I think we have to allow people to adapt more than we have and not just tell people to go home and hide under the bed, but allow them to use other ways – social distancing and other means – to protect themselves," he said.

Barr noted that the U.S. is in a situation "akin to wartime" and that "the government can impose certain limitations" in those scenarios. But he said that the Justice Department would continue to keep an eye on any actions that "restrict people's liberty."

The comments arrived as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, continued to climb in the U.S. As of Thursday morning, the U.S. had reported roughly 432,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 14,800 deaths from it.

When she correctly diagnosed what was wrong with us when we were taken to the Doctor..."And what Medical School did you go to?"

Her retort was..."The same one ALL Mothers go to."

William Bart talks out of his ass most of the time, as does Trump ALL of the time. Draconian measures? The Federal Government has been absent when leading the way. It has been the level headed Governors imposing "life saving measures" during this crisis.

Go duck yoirself, Billy Barr.

is that Trump wants to send some people back to work on May 1st. But not to fear those people will first have their temperatures taken. Doesn't that make you feel safe knowing that people are going back to work because they didn't have a fever? I would feel a lot better if the people who Trump wanted to go back to work were actually tested, and even that is no sure guarantee.

YOU
CANNOT
"REOPEN"
A
DEAD
ECONOMIC
MODEL!!!

The service / gig economies are GONE...
They can not be revived quickly or those incomes (AND SPENDING in the wider economy) cannot be waived away either.

COVID-19 is raging through the USA RIGHT NOW...
If you want to ensure MORE dead, go ahead and tell people "nothing to fear, go back to congregating"...
Hospitals will be over run - worse than before in NYC because the staff and professionals have seen what happens and the price it extracts from care givers...not all, but some will choose discretion over valor and the acute crisis of available workers will be worse too.

Thousands more infected and dead.
Thousands more impacted and torn apart...we will NOT "get over it quickly"...

Trump refuses to recognize the obvious - there is NO path to a return to "normal" that does not include rampant testing of people to find out who is exposed and recovered and who remains at grave risk. More important than just that, you MUST have statistical sampling capable of adequately projecting the risks to make GOOD Decisions.

He won't care.
He will cite "his gut" and "some people are saying" and "well, Jared assures me..."

Hoover, move over - you are being removed as the worst. president. ever. list with a bullet...

That's their plan. That's always been their plan. They believe and fervently hope that the dead will predominately be among more black and brown people within the predominately Democratic strongholds and bonus points if many of those people are the elderly and those with fragile health - you know, those folks that need their Medicare and Social Security, because hell, they're just going to scuttle those programs anyway (and letting those systems collapse has always been their most fevered wet dream. This is their very own perfect storm of evil opportunity.

Thus has been the entire Republican platform for 100 years, or since the departure of Teddy Roosevelt. It matters not what branch or department they're in. It's all about the Benjamins and the tax breaks. Oh, and marginalizing non-white, non-cis, non-Christian, non-male, non-hetero people.

Why would any fool believe him now. Wonder how long ago he was told to say this. Sounds to me like trump soon will try forcing people to work , knowing a pandemic is still very active putting their lives at risk by going back way too soon. Trump caused this too be much worse than it should have been, and is still making it worse by refusing to help. He's interfering with American people getting help.

Put out statements like this now. It's trumps plan to promoter this now, have others claim we should all start working for trump's benefit now even with an active pandemic attacking us, and knowing our lives at risk, after he failed to protect us. This is pure evil anyone would promote this now. Other GOP talking heads will start promoting stuff like this too for him to use. Look for trump to try and hurt any Governors and their states that won't return by defunding them.

Thu Apr 9, 2020, 10:17 AM
Apr 2020

Just a deadline. They’d also like us to argue the date and ignore the lack of a plan.

The early date should get our attention but the lack of a plan is a disaster.

Whatever the date, we will get to a point where it will be difficult to remain locked down. People will start to ignore warnings and if active cases and deaths are down will clamor to “get back to normal”

Now is the time to figure out what the new normal will look like. Are there requirements for masks? Adequate testing available? Recommended triggers for going back in?

Or do we just wing it and half the people in the country (geographically all the country) goes out and has cinco de mayo celebrations including counties that are just approaching peak? People have put off vacations and will want to travel.

Give us the outline of the plan. Prove you have one. Let us track whether we’re at the infection/testing/protection levels needed. You know, the things we should have been tracking a month or two ago or more.

Otherwise I’m convinced we’ll just wing it and the second wave will be too large again.

Note that I’m not agreeing with May but pointing out we will eventually end lockdown and the experts, not barr or trump or kushner, should be able to say something intelligent about it.

in past the end of April. The weather was beautiful here yesterday and lots of people were out and about.

There are pockets like NYC and some of the other epicenters where residents might want to keep staying in, but, many in places life has not really changed that much and people are ready to begin getting back to normal. That's how it is where I live.
