Some states receive masks with dry rot, broken ventilators

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Some states and cities that have been shipped masks, gloves, ventilators and other essential equipment from the nations medical stockpile to fight the coronavirus have gotten an unwelcome surprise: the material is unusable.
Nearly 6,000 medical masks sent to Alabama had dry rot and a 2010 expiration date. More than 150 ventilators sent to Los Angeles were broken and had to be repaired. In Oregon, it was masks with faulty elastic that could cause the straps to snap, exposing medical workers to the disease.
Several of the shipments we have received from the strategic national stockpile contained (personal protective equipment) well past expiration dates and, while we are being told much of the expired equipment is capable of being used for COVID-19 response, they would not be suitable for use in surgical settings, Charles Boyle, a spokesman for Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, said in an email.
He said some of the equipment had been purchased during the H1N1 outbreak more than a decade ago and that the masks with the fragile elastic had been among products previously recalled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state did not distribute them to medical workers.
Tony Miller, Yakima County emergency management director; Horace Ward, operations manager of Yakima Valley Office of Emergency Management; and Blake Scully, a resource supply officer, fromleft, evaluate how many ventilators arrived from the weekly supply shipment Thursday, April 2, 2020, at the Yakima County Office of Emergency Management in Union Gap, Wash. (70,516 posts).... because he paid off Jared's 1.3 billion dollar note on his 666 5th Ave. money pit.
He used a classified P.D.B to help allow the Crown Prince to cut up Khashoggi alive
and Trump & Pompeo helped to cover the murder up and tamp down the world's out-rage.
So Kushner grifting off millions of deaths, illnesses, and economic collapse doesn't surprise me.

(20,199 posts)How are items that expired 10 years ago still on the shelves? I don't know what the normal shelf life of a mask is, but I would think they would be distributed and replaced on a regular basis.

(6,556 posts)His decisions have created many of the problems we are experiencing. He has taken operations that were working and either stopped funding those operations or reassigned the operations to other departments resulting in confusion and inefficiencies. Then he has the audacity to say that he inherited a mess from the Obama administration.

(6,556 posts)We need a Gen. Russel Honore working with the stockpile to ensure that rotation of materials occurring regularly, and that we know what we have and where we have it. I really liked what General Honore said on the Rachel Maddow show said. It made perfect sense, unlike tRump.

(11,316 posts)(and probably some nominal cost). But an orderly turnover could easily be maintained with new in .. and aging supplies distributed to points where they are in demand and rapidly used up. (talking PPE here, not ventilators) But, basically .. requires the will to do the job.
But it all circles around to the fundamental GOP proposition .. it's very difficult to administer good government or services .. when you're baseline supposition is the government is largely unnecessary. Full stop.

(29,565 posts)It sat in my garage for years. I replaced the straps with pieces of my wife's hair ties. Better than nothing.
It is appalling to think expired shit stayed in the stockpile this long. I suspect it may not have.
