(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump will not reopen the Obamacare exchanges to allow uninsured Americans to purchase health care coverage during the coronavirus pandemic, a White House official said Tuesday night.
The decision comes after the president said last week he was considering a special enrollment period to allow individuals to purchase insurance during the crisis -- a move that had been endorsed by Americas Health Insurance Plans, the trade organization representing health insurers.
Ultimately, however, the administration opted against a national mandate that would have mirrored steps that states like New York, California, Connecticut, and Maryland are taking. In New York, people without insurance can apply within 60 days of losing coverage, according to the state website.
. . .
Trump has long opposed the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and tried to repeal it early in his presidency. But he said last week that the administration would be doing a lot of different things on health insurance. He also responded to a question about expanding insurance subsidies or Medicaid checks by saying that many Americans would be receiving very big checks as part of the stimulus bill passed by Congress.

(10,918 posts)But like it says, if you entered the year without health insurance (and still don't have health insurance), "you may have limited options" -- I suspect that really means no options or only very expensive ones.
By the way, many of the 12 or so states that have their own ACA exchanges are having or going to have special enrollment periods -- California and Minnesota are two of those that I know of.

There are no words for the depth of your bottomless black soul.
I have words for you and your family. I will keep them to myself. Yet I hope all my wishes come true.

Do the Trumpists want a violent action in which American's who've been fucked over act out because they can't take it any more? ...because that's what it sounds like they want.

You have to do it before you get sick though.

(15,805 posts)Trump wants to kill Obamacare and bring back all the scam, junk health insurance ripoffs that Obamacare got rid of. He would open the door to the for-profit companies to make huge profits for greedy investors while short changing the patients when they are scared or sick and needed coverage the most.

(11,885 posts)Oh wait I forget he's a serial liar, and is doing the opposite by reducing Medicare, and Medicaid , and cutting SS after claiming he wouldn't. He's greatly reduced the number of people insured while claiming he's done the opposite. Just like all his propaganda about this virus has been , all BS, because he refused to do his job, and still is, while claiming he's doing a great job. That's what a con man does, tells you whatever he thinks you want to hear , then screws you over from doing the opposite.

Doesn't make sense.
What does make sense is that the insurance companies told Trump to keep them from having to add new enrollees.
Kind of like being forced to sell property insurance along the coast with a line of hurricanes headed their way.
