NRA sues California officials for closing gun stores amid coronavirus outbreak
Source: The Hill
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other pro-gun groups filed a lawsuit against California on Friday after the state forced gun stores to close under Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D) shelter-in-place order amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Under Newsom's order, these stores are considered nonessential. The complaint demands that gun shops in California be deemed essential and reopened.
The suit was filed with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Municipalities who target lawful gun stores for closure arent promoting safetyby weaponizing their politics to disarm you and your loved ones, these shameless partisans are recklessly promoting a gun-control agenda that suffocates your self-defense rights when you need them most," Jason Ouimet, the executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said in a statement. /snip.

(24,397 posts)the large groups needed for mass murders. It's certainly not good PR when a guy bearing an AR-15 can only kill two to three people at a time. No sir. They should just wait until things get back to normal to showcase their WsMD.

(51,644 posts)laws to change too. Businesses and the GOP Govt are taking advantage of the $2 trillion stimulus. Of course the GOP-NRA will try to take advantage of the virus too. This is why tRump won't use a federal lock down...all those gun rights groups will throw a fit, civil liberties and all.

(9,538 posts)The County Sheriff here reasoned that if they were closed, people would resort to unlicensed dealers who don't do background checks.
However he urged gun stores to go to an appointment-only basis and maintain social distancing.
Gun sales are generally NOT emergencies though I could see a few cases where they would be, say if you had a restraining order against a violence ex and feared he would violate the order.
