A Woman With Lupus Said Her Health Care Provider Is Stopping Her Chloroquine Prescription And Thanke
Source: BuzzFeed
A 45-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) said she received an online message from her health care provider stating it will no longer refill her vital hydroxychloroquine prescriptions because that drug is being used to treat the "critically ill with COVID-19," the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The letter thanked her for her "sacrifice."
Dale, who lives in the Los Angeles area and asked to only be identified by her first name, told BuzzFeed News she "started crying" upon receiving the message from her doctor's office on Tuesday. She had previously called Kaiser Permanente, a major health care network based in Oakland, about why her prescription was being denied.

Despite thin evidence for the drugs effectiveness against coronavirus infections, shortages of chloroquine have erupted since Trump called it a game changer at a White House news conference late last week. The drug, a derivative of an antimalarial drug, has been added to the regimen for treating COVID-19 infections in China and South Korea and is being tested in clinical trials in the US.

People will suffer and/or die from things that have nothing to do with COVID-19 because of the treatment of COVID-19.

The only indication it might help is purely anecdotal. There have been no large scale clinical trials completed yet, if any have been started - there has not been time.

(4,079 posts)is that taking the wrong dose or the wrong "kind" of drug can be immediately lethal. Besides that, I have read the same as you...that there has been no proof either for or against efficacy.

In addition, that family of drugs has some pretty significant side effects and people have already died from taking them.

(111,383 posts)after Putin's Pet Pig opened his stupid mouth and India (the largest maker of the generic) shut down export. Either this lady will need another DMARD or she'll have to go on temporary higher dose Prednisone, which is miserable stuff.
Plaquenil and other quinine based drugs are going to have to be doled out on a case by case basis, to people who have no other recourse.
Thanks a lot, Porky.
