Trump Postpones Real ID Requirements Due to Virus Concerns
Source: Bloomberg
Donald Trump said Monday he was delaying the Oct. 1, 2020, deadline for Americans to get a Real ID to travel, as part of an effort to limit peoples exposure to the coronavirus.
Im also announcing that were postponing the deadline for compliance with Real ID requirements, he said at a White House briefing. At a time when were asking Americans to maintain social distancing, we do not want to require people to go with their local DMV. We will be announcing the new deadline very soon.
A Real ID-compliant identification will eventually be required to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building in the U.S..
Several lawmakers have requested the delay in recent days, citing challenges stemming from the coronavirus.
Last week, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi said it was foolish to ask people to wait for hours in a crowded waiting room.

(29,565 posts)It's a stupid law and after 15 years it should just be repealed.

(35,317 posts)find a really good one.
Sometimes they don't, and they just keep looking for reasons make the same demand over and over.
At this point they had until October to make the change-over, only having 15 years of excuses for it.
The reason it's a stupid law is that we don't like it now. Ultimate truth depends too often on what we find convenient. Obama didn't find it stupid when he issued the last extension and said it was the last extension states should have.
Extend the deadline for 8 months from whenever things return to relative quiet. Not everybody likes carrots, sometimes there needs to be a stick.

(8,311 posts)... the law places an unequal burden on women, who traditionally change their names upon marriage, to ALSO bring along all their marriage/divorce records to link their maiden name to their current name. My mother has the most recent two of her three marriage/divorce records, but not the one that actually links back to her maiden name. Fun!
Also, then states are pretty much saying, by the documents they're choosing for proof of address, that if you don't own a car and utilities aren't in your name, you're also screwed. Boarders/informal roommates/people living with relatives are all at a higher burden to prove they have a right to enter federal court. My state doesn't take a person's social security statement showing proof of income as a document to establish address (even though it's mailed to the person), only as proof of their SSN.
And while not being able to fly is one thing, locking people out of the federal court franchise because they are on social security/use the SS bank card so no bank statement, live with relatives so no utilities in their name, no car so no tax records/car insurance.... well, that's something else indeed.

(29,565 posts)The demand for death certificates may overwhelm the authorities.
I think the lack of implementation for 15 years without adverse consequences proves the stupidity of the law. Your opinion my differ. Florida would not accept, or even look at our documentation when we renewed our licenses in person years ago, then let us renew online a year or so without mentioning RealID-because Flori-duh. So there is an element of pissed off in my view of the situation.

(60,014 posts)That whole "Patriot Act" b.s. bothered me right from the start along with creating a department titled Homeland Security.

(1,242 posts)I knew by consolidating the departments that they were going to slash the crap out of them beginning with FEMA. One of the Tea party lies (mainly from Barbara Bachman) was that Obama was going to put people in FEMA camps. The economy was so bad that I bet GOP strategists were anticipating depression era CCC camps so they jumped the gun with their FEMA camps BS. Even though the previous administration had already aligned FEMA under Homeland Security, they couldn't resist.

(2,022 posts)So are so many places that require a current license. I'd guess a lot of them are going to be making exceptions for the next 6 months or so. The states could have some kind of mail-in system where you get a temporary renewal document (no pic), but that would probably take a year to put in place.

Renewal of license for drivers 70 and older, who are required to take an in-person test.
Renewal of license for a driver who hasnt had an in-office visit in 15 years.
Renewal of a registration expired for more than 90 days.
For these and other matters requiring office visits, the DMV has asked California law enforcement agencies to exercise discretion for 60 days in their enforcement of expiration dates.

Other states (Texas, Illinois, etc.) have given similar extensions to expired and soon-to-expire licenses and registrations:

(9,651 posts)by way of their website.
Seeing as how we are living in Bizarro world, this may not work this time around. But it can't hurt to try.
Choose the location you want, book the closest appointment you can, even if it's past your driver's license expiration date. Leave the DMV window open on your screen. Every half hour, go back, and try to get another appointment that is sooner. If you are lucky, someone will have canceled, and then it will ask you which of the two appointments you want to keep. Take the sooner one. Keep doing that until you get one in the time frame you need.
It's never taken me longer than two hours for someone to cancel an appointment that fits in perfectly with what I'm looking for.
I used to have to do this for my dad, because he was in his 80s, and still driving. And he had to take a test every year.
I had to do it for myself last year, because I forgot that my license was expiring. By the time they sent a notice to me, I couldn't get in until a month past the expiration date. Hello DMV online. Didn't take long at all and I had my appointment before my license expiration date.
I also know that the DMV is giving everyone leeway right now. Their website should have some sort of information about that.
Good luck!
