Coronavirus latest: Argentina announces mandatory quarantine
Source: Deutsche Welle
Argentina will begin a mandatory quarantine at midnight on Friday, President Alberto Fernández announced in a televised address.
The measure, which restricts people to their homes, will last until March 31 and be enforced by security authorities.
"It is time for us to understand that we are caring for the health of Argentines," said Fernandez. "We have now dictated this measure trying to make the effects on the economy as least harmful as possible."
Argentina has 128 total cases of coronavirus, with three deaths.

Argentine health care staff urge their 45 million fellow countrymen to "stay at home" as part of an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
President Alberto Fernández's lockdown order - similar to those enacted by China, and Spain, and Italy - are the most stringent in the region thus far, and in the nation's history.
"If we stay home, there will be less contagion and we will suffer much less," he explained. "We still have many days in which to take care of ourselves, and a battle to fight."

(21,650 posts)They only have 128 known cases thus far - and unlike Orange Amin, they encourage testing down there - but they're not taking any chances.
A year to remember, no doubt about it.

I feel bad for the people of Brazil. Bolsonaro is not taking this seriously at all and has not issued any such orders as far as I'm aware. And their fall has started, it will only get worse as their winter comes on in the coming months.

They have a great, conscientious president, elected just in time to steer them away from the previous Trump twin's economic
catastrophe.

(21,650 posts)I understand the citizenry is largely obeying the lockdown, which is good. The streets are nearly deserted - even in busy Buenos Aires.
Here's footage from Buenos Aires webcams at midnight - when the lockdown began.
There's still a little traffic (stragglers heading home at the last minute, mostly); but it's a fraction of the normal traffic on a weeknight. Enjoy.

I saw cop cars in two of the locations. They can do a lot of good during these strange days.
Thanks for the views, sandensea.
Stay safe, "en casa."
