AP Interview: Ahmadinejad pushes new world order

NEW YORK (AP) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that a new world order needs to emerge, away from years of American "bullying" and domination.

Ahmadinejad spoke to The Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly - his last as president of Iran.

He also discussed solutions for Syria, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

"God willing, a new order will come together and we'll do away with everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad said. "Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying. They command from behind the microphone. They command and impose their wills on how things should be done. I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

1. The thing is he is right, no matter how tyranical his own government is

But only he and a few other leaders not dependent on US aid or trade can actually speak this truth to power. I am sure that most of the world leaders agree with him on this point, but simply cannot say it.

As a Canadian I remember a time when the USA, our good neighbour to the south, was regarded as a beacon of liberty and justice throughout the world. We grew up in awe of it. A is right that children around the world that have grown up with Bush Jr.s contempt for the rest of the world and UN resolutions and even treaties that it has signed, together with the Iraq invasion, and now have a completely different regard for the USA than we did. And the continuing war in Afghanistan combined with the nutjob baggers that continually denigrate the Muslim faith, things aren't looking rosier. What is sad is that so many Americans do not mind being despised and disrespected in the rest of the world as long as they can boast about how they have the biggest guns and their football team is winning. At least that's how it looks to an outsider.

What is also regrettable is that someone like A. can get away with saying these things only because the US has fallen so far itself in the rest of the worlds eyes.
