Lone GOP congressman delays House coronavirus relief bill from moving to Senate
Source: NBC News
Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, is holding up the House-passed coronavirus relief bill and preventing it from being delivered to the Senate for a vote. The House was expected to make technical corrections Monday to the bipartisan measure, passed by the House early Saturday, but Gohmert is insisting on reading them, a Democratic leadership aide confirmed to NBC News on Monday.
The technical corrections package has not yet been finalized and the House wants to pass it by unanimous consent because the House is on recess this week. If one member stands in opposition, the House cant send the bill to the Senate without bringing the entire House back from their districts to Washington for a vote. The Senate is in session this week, but schedules have been fluid because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Gohmert was among 40 Republicans who voted against the bill that overwhelmingly passed the House on Saturday and was endorsed by President Donald Trump. In a statement explaining his vote, the Texas Republican praised how Trump had negotiated the package but said, "This crucial bill was not even given the normal amount of time to debate it on the House floor."

(10,497 posts)This oil industry POS voted against the relief bill and never holds town halls (in non-virus times). His only mandate comes from his big oil industry donors.
I sent him an email telling him of all of the voters I am going to register in our blue areas of the community. I called him out for his protecting corporations as if they were his only constituents.
Please feel free to call his office (409)-835-0108 or (202) 225-2831.

A little more conservative than I'd normally support but he could give Louie a run for his money.
Also a very nice man

(12,590 posts)He continues to draw his $174,000 salary whether he's in his Senate office or at home having a drink. Since there isn't any testing to speak of, he's able to put his head in the sand (or up his ass) about the effects the disease is having on his constituents' health, or their livelihood. "Nobody I know has it," he probably says to his friends. Like many in the GOP he just wants power, and what better way to demonstrate how powerful you are than by single-handedly stopping a major piece of legislation.
Moscow Mitch is currently doing the same thing in the Senate. You'd think there's not a life-and-death crisis out here.

Gohmert is doing more than any other to rip that reputation to shreds. If I were in his district, I wouldn't say so publicly.

(7,651 posts)when compared to most places in Texas. However, most of the urban areas are totally different from rural Texas. But because we are so gerrymandered these days most of our leadership and State legislature does not reflect population of Texas (with the possible exception of Ft. Worth). I am sick and tired of the Bush/Perry/ Abbott leadership that is such a downer. BTW - Nice to hear from a UT grad.
Peace and Love!!

(18,640 posts)It's enough to ask why no one more qualified runs in that district on a GOP ticket, but Gohmert is the laughing stock of the US House of Reps. Do the voters in East Texas enjoy sending an idiot to represent them? Are they punking the rest of us?

(18,640 posts)But Gohmert's must be carefully gerrymandered to have only people who never evolved beyond the Bronze Age. To their credit, I'm sure they can start a fire and many probably wear shoes.

(20,209 posts)East Texas, which includes Gohmert's district (1) and Steve Stockman's old district (36) is pretty much Klan central in the small towns. Gohmert's district is just north of Jasper.
If Jasper sounds familiar, it's where 3 white supremacists dragged a black man, James Byrd Jr, behind their truck until there was nothing left but his torso, which they dumped in front of the an African American Church. It was in 1998. His murder and the murder of Matthew Shephard lead to the federal hate crime law. 2 of his killers received the death penalty.

Seriously, the Mexicans kicked Texas butt at the Alamo... we should sue for peace and, as part of the settlement, give all of Texas back to Mexico.
well... I'm joking... but can we somehow get rid of the single stupidest person in Congress before he kills a lot of innocent people and make millions of the soon to be unemployed homeless too.
