California rejects Trump effort to cut off federal funds over abortion
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - California on Friday fought back against a Trump administration threat to withhold federal funds for some health programs unless it stopped requiring health insurers to cover abortions, saying it would undermine the state's authority to protect women's reproductive rights.
Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xavier Becerra, both Democrats, accused the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of threatening billions of dollars of funding, not just for abortions, by reversing the Obama administration's view of a federal law governing insurance coverage.
In a letter to Roger Severino, director of HHS's Office for Civil Rights ("OCR" , Becerra said California already complied with the law, citing OCR's 2016 ruling in the state's favor in similar cases, and that a provision in the state constitution protected the right to have an abortion as a privacy right.
California's stance risks a possible showdown with HHS, which could try to expand any funding pullback to five other U.S. states that also require insurers to cover abortions.

(3,074 posts)Yes, tRump's policy would certainly undermine the state's authority to protect women's rights. Abortion is a health care option whether tRump likes it or not.

(12,213 posts)And I'm hearing political ads heading in the same direction as Trump.
Trump is even trying the lame attempt by the GOP tried a couple years ago to blame the drought on the Democratic party (because we haven't had much rain this year). That last attempt died quickly when we were drenched with rain.
This makes me think either Trump wants a big win in 2020 (with Putin's help), or they are worried they don't have enough to win and need help from California.
The GOP usually doesn't focus this hard on California, so something is up.

(21,360 posts)if a state doesn't vote for me I will make life hell for them.
I wonder what the 5 other states are? I bet he won't cut funding to the red states, if there are any.

(2,227 posts)I believe Newsome will be running in 2024, ESPECIALLY if the turd wins. He will have been governor of California long enough to take the next step.
The turd wants to start nipping THAT particular bud, immediately. Hence the concentration on California AND Newsome.
Newsome has a trifecta. Smart, extremely telegenic (it never hurts to be handsome), and he starts with the powerhouse of California behind him.
That is going to interfere with the turd's "king for life" fantasy. Bigly.

(6,831 posts)He has attacked CA again and again because CA does not knuckle under to him. Gavin Newsome is a strong governor and he has the people behind him.
trumpie even tried to ship about 50 corona virus-infected passengers from that cruise ship to Southern CA WITHOUT NOTIFYING OR EVEN DISCUSSING IT WITH THE STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT FIRST. How's that for a giant FU ?
