The White House on Thursday asked U.S. scientists and medical researchers to investigate the scientific origins of the novel coronavirus, as misinformation about the outbreak spreads online.

The director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), in a letter to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, requested that scientific experts "rapidly" look into the origins of the virus in order to address both the current spread and "to inform future outbreak preparation and better understand animal/human and environmental transmission aspects of coronaviruses."

The national academies consist of private, nonprofit institutions charged with providing scientific support to the federal government.

The director of the OSTP, Kelvin Droegemeier, wrote in the letter to the president of the National Academy of Sciences, Marcia McNutt, that a widely disputed paper on the origins -- subsequently withdrawn -- had shown the urgency for accurate information about the genesis of the outbreak.

Our hubris as to how "smart" we are will get us all killed. In this case the outbreak was in China, but don't forget for a moment that similar playing around with "super bugs" is also happening in some labs here in the US, Russia, Japan or wherever. I understand that scientists are trying to research and prevent future outbreaks of a population decimating pandemic, but the hubris comes from thinking that their containment protocols are totally fool proof. All it takes is one failure or mistake.

Dr. Lyons-Weiler has put all of the scientific evidence backing his theory on the web for other scientists and interested parties to research on their own. He says that new sequences related to the study come in every day, and that he will publish a definitive final study that challenges the contention that 2019 n-CoV has no history of recombination. He told Highwire that if there have been covert vaccination studies using this virus in China, the human subjects in such trials may have become super-sensitized to secondary challenge from natural infection, which is what animal studies to date have found for every experimental vaccines that uses recombinant SARS proteins.

If our own CDC doesn't know, and our government has to direct them to try to discover the truth, then something is wrong there. I am guessing that some forms of bio weapons are built on naturally-occurring pathogens and viruses. And, since one fact we do know is that there IS a lab at the origination area, then this opinion is every bit as valid as anyone else's.

I have read that three different critters are responsible. We hear wildly different numbers being put forth, etc. The most alarming thing I read was about the 34-year old doctor losing his life from this virus. There is something in this story that doesn't add up.

I do not intend to "demonize" the Chinese. Chinese citizens are like any other common citizen. Just people being oppressed. But, I don't think that they are telling the complete story here. And, if this is from a bio lab, they are never going to tell us all about it.

The world's economy is going to be disrupted. This virus is spreading like wildfire. Not to stoke the fires of panic, but this is a serious problem.

US preparedness to deal with the threat of coronavirus has been hampered by the personnel and budget cuts made by the Trump administration over the past three years, according to health experts.
There is no one in the White House tasked specifically to oversee a coordinated government-wide response in the event of a pandemic, since the post of senior director for global health security and biothreats on the national security council (NSC) was eliminated last May.
