Rush Limbaugh announces he has advanced lung cancer
Source: New York Daily News
Rush Limbaugh, the loudmouthed conservative radio host, announced on his show Monday that he has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
The 69-year-old The Rush Limbaugh Host said he has begun treatment for the cancer, but didnt go into details.
There are going to be days that Im not going to be able to be here, he said on the show.
Limbaugh launched his career as a DJ on a Pennsylvania radio station in 1971 and continued moving up the food chain, including joining New Yorks WABC in 1988, just before the Republican National Convention.

(81,322 posts)I certainly dont wish lung cancer on anyone.
But I do get how some will want to celebrate the bad fortune of a mighty pain-giver. After all, hes always been first (and loudest) in line to celebrate when our side faced adversity. And hed revel in rubbing it in. And that generates a TON of pain and hostility and negativity and intolerance and just plain old mean-spiritedness, and a wish to see the favor returned.
It takes my mind to many comments, quotes, and descriptions of the trumpets and why they love and celebrate trump and hate us. How they love him because of the mere fact that he makes us miserable. Thats how much they hate US. And they delight and damn near dance in the street when were hurt or saddened or insulted or made to suffer in some way by what hes sad and/or done. The whole I drink liberals tears thing - which Im hearing and seeing and reading quite frequently now.
And all I can ask, again, is what does that say about THEM?
Pretty sad. Pretty pathetic.

Ed Rollins stated in the 2008 documentary Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story:
[Atwater] was telling this story about how a Living Bible was what was giving him faith and I said to Mary [Matalin], "I really, sincerely hope that he found peace". She said, "Ed, when we were cleaning up his things afterwards, the Bible was still wrapped in the cellophane and had never been taken out of the package", which just told you everything there was. He was spinning right to the end.

(129,096 posts)I actually heard his very first show back in 1988 - which was on his flagship 770 WABC in NYC (that we can pick up here in Philly). The noon slot was originally filled by Lynn Samuels and she was booted to a different slot and studio when he came on. Doesn't seem like it's been 32 years but it has.

(129,096 posts)Limbaugh had a staff that used to produce SNL-like "commercials" that lampooned some of the more notable "liberals" - a favorite subject being Jessie Jackson. His show started up the year after the FCC abolished the "Fairness Doctrine", so at the time, there were still some shows with "liberal/progressive" points of view on the air. But that abolishment eventually lead to shows pairing "conservative vs liberal" (like Hannity & Colmes" and "Batchelor & Alexander" ), which became de riguer in a manner that mimicked CNN's "Crossfire", until they eventually eliminated even that format and went full-on RW loon, both live and syndicated. The deregulation of the airwaves finished liberal programming off for good when the RW bought thousands of AM radio stations and put the loon programming on them - with one group using Limbaugh as as an anchor and others using Beck or Levin as an anchor. It has been an ugly 30 years and it forced me to get a subscription back in 2007, to (then- ) XM radio, now SiriusXM, to finally hear some kind of liberal/progressive programming.
In essence, he eventually became the mouthpiece for the GOP with the insanity of Gingrich and their "revolution" mustering their troops for a full-on assault on all sensibility, subsequently leading to the teabaggers for 2010.
It is bizarre how far they have all fallen throwing their gawd Ronald Raygun under the bus.

(199 posts)The book "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations" was first lent to me by a military vet that I worked with, shortly after it was published in '99. I started reading it over lunch, and had zero productivity for that afternoon and the next day until I finished it.
The book is still available, new or used (and maybe at your library). If you haven't read it recently (or ever) you need to grab a copy. I'm going to dig up mine and re-read it for the memories.
At the same time this book came out I worked with a bunch of Ditto heads that actually got a large office together, just so they could listen to his show. It was nice that they self-quarantined themselves to slow the spread of the poison. The guy who organized it all was (and is) a good friend. I used to email him Michael Moore's missives, back when you got that sort of thing though Usenet or email. It really pissed him off. We would bitch each other out over lunch (I mean have constructive discussions), or any time we visited each others office, but we had mutual respect and a lot of common ground, and it never hurt our friendship or working relationship.
I honestly felt bad for Limbaugh when he announced his hearing loss, but then I found out why. I still felt sympathy for him as a drug addict. That is terrible affliction for anyone, regardless of their class, but I had no respect for him because he was such a hypocrite for how he portrayed fellow drug addicts.
And then there was the time that he was detained by federal agents after a return from the Dominican Republic for "R&R" with drugs not prescribed to him. Specifically, Viagra. A popular R&R drug.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_the_Dominican_Republic
Again, look at his history. I don't take any joy in what he is and will go through. But it somehow seems fitting. He was a cancer on our society and damaged it "bigly".
BumRushDaShow
(129,096 posts)I remember events such as his announcing his hearing loss (due to Rheumatoid arthritis in the ear bone joints - one of my sisters has RA) and remember when he moved out of NYC and down to Florida to a compound where he did his broadcasts... And I also remember when Poppy was first running for re-election and Limbaugh "announced" that he "wasn't" supporting him, causing all sorts of a stir in conservative land.
I remember his EIB would sue stations that bucked the syndication time slot format, where he stipulated that his show MUST air in a "noon - 3 pm" slot (and one Baltimore station refused and finally started breaking the grip).
And yes he has had all sorts of "affluenza" criminal run-ins including the pills, but not just Viagra - the biggy was Oxcontin.
I remember he used to bring on guest hosts like black conservative and anti-affirmative action nut Ward Connerly as well as pseudo-economist Thomas Sowell.
The biggy was when he summarily announced that if Obama was re-elected, then he was moving to Costa Rica.
It eventually became too much as more and more RW programming took over the airwaves... But fortunately I found Joe Madison - who originally had a graveyard show here in Philly back in the late '80s and was later fired from that... But then was back on the air here years later on another station in syndication, with his show partially overlapping Limbaugh's time (Madison's show was 10 - 1pm I think). I eventually got XM radio in 2007 when I found where Madison was also being broadcast (he had originally been broadcasting in syndication with Cathy Hughe's Radio One/Syndication One programming - on both sat radio and terrestrial radio - and then eventually went completely onto satellite radio). The SiriusXM merger brought about a couple left/liberal/progressive stations that included some of the old Air America folks including Rachel... as well as other familiar voices like Bill Press and Stephanie Miller.
Nitram
(22,822 posts)penalties for drug addicts instead of medical help. He even pretended on air that he couldn't pronounce "Oxycontin" so it looked like he had little experience with the drug. And, of course, because he is wealthy he got off with a slap on the wrist. He should have had his broadcast license taken away. I feel the same antipathy towards secretly gay conservatives who espouse severe laws against gay people.

RW talk radio, the age of limbaugh, is going to lose a lot of stations and fall apart and those senators who vote to acquit need to get that message that limbaugh won't be around to rationalize and excuse their vote for the most corrupt, ignorant, and treasonous WH occupier in history

Cancer is horrible, no matter how you lived your life. I truly believe if we had spent the money we wasted on wars on finding a cure for cancer, we would have one by now. My mum died of cancer.

I know a couple of women (from my own cancer support group) with stage IV lung cancer, and they have been plugging along for several years. NNadir
(33,525 posts)...of "stage" to be replaced at some point by a molecular biological category, although certainly there is a factor associated with distribution of metastases.
A common place for lung cancer to metastasize is the brain, but as Limbaugh's brain is hardly an important organ, this is hardly of consequence.
He's a fool and like those he defends and emulates, he hates science because he doesn't know any. He's unaware of his ethical state and similarly likely unaware of his medical condition.
Anything he says about anything should be taken with a large grain of salt.
Small Cell 5-year survival rate: 2009-2015
All stages: 6.3%
Localized: 27.3%
Regionalized: 15.6%
Distant: 2.8%
Unstaged/Unknown: 9.5%
Non Small Cell 5-year survival rate 2009-2015
All stages: 23.7%
Localized: 61.4%
Regionalized: 34.5%
Distant: 6.1%
Distance is the degree of metastasis.
NNadir
(33,525 posts)They include people diagnosed 11 years ago.
There have been huge, if unheralded, advances in the last ten years. The numbers are certainly higher now.
Mosby
(16,319 posts)Couple key points though is that lung cancer is pretty fatal when it spread and small cell carcinoma is a death sentence. Those numbers also don't break out the survival rates for people of different ages, races and gender. Not surprisingly, older people have much lower survival rates.
NNadir
(33,525 posts)...but if you reflect on it a bit, the largest cause of death is being born.
Cancer is not even close to being a single disease, and even among people who have cancers of a specific cellular type, ie, sclc, there are variances from individual to individual, and even within an individual.
The point is that one can extend one's life considerably with modern treatments and even not overly degrade one's quality of life significantly.
If I were diagnosed, I would search the scientific literature to determine my prognosis depending on the decisions I made. I did this for my sister-in-law when she got cancer, and currently she's in remission.
In the case of my mother-in-law who apparently was developing rapid melanoma - this is relatively common in elderly people near the end of life, and as you imply seldom ends up as a cause of death as other syndromes kill them first - I was able to convince the family that any treatment for melanoma would only exacerbate suffering.
I have no use for Limbaugh of course, and the sooner his pernicious mouth is permanently silenced, the better it is for decency and humanity, but I am merely stating the general case.

I can remember the last day I listened to him, and it was over 20 years ago. He started his show celebrating the death of Earth First founder Judi Bari from breast cancer. Smoke is harmful to lung and heart health. Whether from burning wood, tobacco or marijuana, toxins and carcinogens are released from the combustion of materials. Smoke from marijuana combustion has been shown to contain many of the same toxins, irritants and carcinogens as tobacco.
Cigar smoking causes cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung. It may also cause cancer of the pancreas. Moreover, daily cigar smokers, particularly those who inhale, are at increased risk for developing heart disease and other types of lung disease.
Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than nonsmokers.

(8,287 posts)and I won't even try.
His lies and stupidity is what helped destroy our republic.
And my family.
I have a sister and brother that listen to his b.s. every freaking day.
And limdick is the reason our family can't discuss politics. Or anything really.
He put a foul stench out there and it will take generations to wash off that nastiness.
Good bye and good riddance.

Here lies a piece of shit,
admired by many of less wit.

The shit is poison and we should move in the direction of a ban on cigarettes at least. FDA is concerned about vaping but that shit is still going strong?

(30,745 posts)Tim Russet was a Democrat. After he became a media celebrity, I don't know what he was. He took great delight in the Clinton impeachment. His death made things easier for Obama, IMO.
Maybe Limbaugh's illness and possible early death will help our eventual nominee. The conservative scum mouthpieces will scramble for awhile before one attains ascendancy.

(3,404 posts)In 1990 when GHW Bushs campaign character assassin discovered that he was dying of cancer and went and personably apologized to everyone that may have been harmed by his dirty tactics, even Mike Dukakis who Bush defeated in the 88 election.
Slinging the GOP dirt for over 30 years, Rush has caused a lot of pain. He came very close to a confession in 2008 the day after Obama won claiming he was tired of carrying the GOP water but he recanted those statements the following day and fell back into the GOP line the following day.
Maybe there is still a beating heart in there somewhere.

(8,620 posts)Don't worry about Rush; he'll be okay. He just needs to pack a few cases of viagra into his personal airplane, and head down to the Dominican Republic for a nice romp with underage victims. Just like the old days. He'll be good as new in no time.

(2,958 posts)I will not dance on his grave, but I will not shed a tear. His uncivil behavior on the radio was an early step in the decline in decorum of American society. His devaluation and mocking of good and decent people. The recent episode of "Frontline" exploring the divide in America used 2008 to start the discussion, but I felt it should have started earlier and talk radio being part of the equation.

(1,996 posts)but he had more influence on the US political system than anyone else I could think of. Without him and his later clones there would probably been no political career of Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Rat snake McConnell or DJT. He made the most rotten part of conservatism mainstream and accepted. He was paid obscene amounts of money which brought another bunch of rat bastards onboard. He made cruelty and slander a false feature of being smart. When I look at the radioactive sewer of US politics, him and and his oligarch financial supporters were most responsible for the current situation.
