Huawei set for limited role in UK 5G networks
Source: BBC
The UK has decided to let Huawei continue to be used in its 5G networks but with restrictions, despite pressure from the US to block the firm. The Chinese firm will be banned from supplying kit to "sensitive parts" of the network, known as the core.
In addition, it will only be allowed to account for 35% of the kit in a network's periphery, which includes radio masts. And it will be excluded from areas near military bases and nuclear sites. "Huawei is reassured by the UK government's confirmation that we can continue working with our customers to keep the 5G rollout on track," the firm's UK chief Victor Zhang said in a statement. "It gives the UK access to world-leading technology and ensures a competitive market."
The Prime Minister had faced pressure from the US and some Conservative MPs to block the Chinese tech giant on the grounds of national security. A Trump administration official has said the US "is disappointed" with the decision.

(7,917 posts)Phone hacking by Rupert Murdoch's nasty elves was nothing compared to what is coming in with Huawei tech.

(7,917 posts)There is substantive evidence that senior engineers at Huawei are involved or have been involved in military security activities they are not allowed to cite or discuss. Past practices suggest the Chinese Military is very closely involved in tech firms.

(1,568 posts)I totally understand the concern with Huawei equipment being installed in critical locations. After all, there is no reason to assume the Chinese wouldn't do the same things our intelligence agencies have done (perhaps even more since they have fewer legal issues to work around and within) However, saying we're losing the internet to china is a bit silly. If we're "losing the internet" to china then it's not because of any risk of back doors, but because they are offering better deals/tech than we are. If that's the case (which I am not convinced of), then we should be looking within to figure out what we can do to make our tech & services more attractive.
