Gavin Newsom asks Trump's HUD to turn over California land for homeless housing

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

“Emergency shelter solves sleep and we agree this is an urgent priority,” Newsom wrote in a letter Tuesday to Ben Carson, the U.S. secretary of housing and urban development. “But only housing and services solve homelessness.”

The governor launched a similar program last year, identifying vacant state-owned land and soliciting proposals from developers and local governments to build affordable housing projects on the sites.

“As you engage California with offers of resources, I hope you will match our commitment to comprehensive solutions that go beyond temporary tent villages,” Newsom wrote.

With a reasonable idea, the federal government could help with the housing crisis. Here in Hawaii, the governor proposed something similar, using state land and urging developers to provide plans for affordable housing. That will not solve the problem of homelessness, but combined with mental health outreach, should reduce the number of people sleeping in the streets and parks.
