Space Force unveils service uniforms with camouflage design
Source: The Hill
The U.S. Space Force (USSF) late Friday unveiled camouflage uniforms bearing the branch's first nametapes for its members.
"The first #SpaceForce utility uniform nametapes have touched down in the Pentagon," the service branch tweeted from its official account, attaching a photo of the uniforms.
The uniforms were welcomed with praise by some, including the official Twitter account for the U.S. Navy, which called the clothing "out of this world" in a tweet. "What are the coordinates? Let's trade," the military branch added.
However, some social media users seized on the opportunity to mock the uniforms, asking questions like, "Why do we need camo in space?"

"General Raymond's team has a -- a massive, incredibly well thought out and planned implementation process for ... uniforms, pay, songs, that they need to go through to get a Space Force ... I don't know the timeline on it but we can probably get you guys an update on some Space Force-related issues in the near future."

(14,176 posts)Do they think it looks smart in its own right? Because I think it looks ugly. Its supposed to look ugly. Or at least not stand out, and be pretty. It looks like dirt, and old leaves. It looks that way for a purpose, to be used when the background is of the Earth. Also to protect in combat. As far as I read, I don't see them involved in combat either.
I think eventually the US will actually have a manned space force in orbit and beyond. Sci Fi has yet to be wrong on its hard predictions. It was an opportunity to design something truly unique. Actually that T-shirt is not far from a real possibility. If it were on a similar sewn uniform as the one on the top. But dark blue, and with stars on a portion of it. Maybe just down the sleeve, or on the shoulders.

(2,606 posts)camouflage for the Port Security Units, but currently it is in the desert camouflage. This would probably be implemented if we were involved in combat operations in SE Asia, but just because it exists doesn't mean it is implemented automatically.
Personally I take this to mean that the folks in charge are trying to appease Trump with minimal effort. They expect big changes before this becomes serious, so they are just putting something out there.

(15,349 posts)I retired from the Navy after 30 years. In that time, I can count 10 uniform changes.
We went from Salt and Peppers to Crackerjack without piping, Crackerjack with piping, bell bottom dungarees, coveralls, back to Salt and Peppers, to Black and Khakis, to green camoflauge, then to Blue Camoflauge.
After hundreds of thousands, if not millions to come up with Blue Camoflauge, someone pointed out; "hey, if a Sailor fell over the side wearing one of these, we'd never find to them
They then decided to go back to Green Camoflauge.
Everytime there is a uniform shift, contractors that design and make the uniforms get a killing... and taxpayers foot the bill for clothing allowances so we can go buy the new uniforms and get them tailored with all the accoutrements.
Best uniform I ever wore was Blue Coveralls. They were comfortable, durable and inexpensive...in other words... the last thing a government contractor wanted.

(14,825 posts)when congress approved it, it funded it. I forget the amount, but it was sizeable.
But this will be a ground-based force. Sure, some will be astronauts, some will fly planes, but there won't be any battlestars or ty fighters. Anything you can think of as using a human crew could be done by automated systems. There really is no need for a space based crew.

(50,562 posts)They haven't passed out the organization chart for Space Force, but I suspect satellite communications will be a big part of their mission.
So...let's say you're Lieutenant General Sam Jones and you're commanding general of XVIII Airborne Corps. You've just been given orders by President-for-Life Trump to deploy to support the Wakanda Ministry of Defense in their war against Nambia. (And five minutes after you receive the order, you receive a phone call from the White House Situation Room: "Look, General Jones, we can't convince the dimwit Wakanda and Nambia don't really exist...so we're going to declare the 25th Infantry Division the "Nambian Army" and you deploy the 101st Airborne to Hawaii for a month of training - at least half of which is to be training in how to surf."
You will need a tactical high-capacity SATCOM terminal from Space Force to transmit news of the war against Nambia back to Trump. It will be on a five-ton truck. It will have two 30KW generators along with it, and a crew of 20 Space Rangers led by a Space Cadet with the rank of Captain.
The LAST thing you need is for these 21 highly-trained individuals to show up at the 101st's Division Tactical Operations Center in Star Trek uniforms.

(34,195 posts)And the "Space Force" doesn't need jungle camo in space.
Abnredleg
(670 posts)it's members are not going anywhere near space - they will be sitting behind computer consoles on earth. And what will they be wearing? The standard USAF utility uniform, which happens to be woodland camouflaged. If they are forward deployed to the ME, then they will wear desert camouflage. In the military, everyone wears camouflaged uniforms, regardless of their role, because that's what "uniform" means. Think of it as corporate branding.

(670 posts)and I'm sure the AF leadership winces every time he opens his mouth. The Space Command, as implemented, actually makes a lot of sense, being discussed for many years. Unfortunately it's now linked to Trump, which means it automatically generates opposition and ridicule regardless of its merits.
