Impeachment Live Updates: Chief Justice John Roberts to Swear In Senators

Source: New York Times

Not long before 2 p.m., Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. made the short trip across First Street from the Supreme Court to the Capitol, where he will administer an oath to senators for President Trump’s impeachment trial and preside over it.

Chief Justice Roberts entered the building to a burst of camera flashes dressed in a suit tie, without his judicial robes on. He was escorted by the Senate sergeant-at-arms.

When the time comes, a group of four senators — two Republicans, two Democrats — will escort a robed Chief Justice Roberts into the chamber.

Is the entire trial going to happen this afternoon? Republicans vote for no witnesses and an immediate vote on the articles and then head home for the weekend leaving the Unites States of America ... what?

Upon such articles being presented to the Senate,
the Senate shall, at 1 o’clock afternoon of the day (Sunday
excepted) following such presentation, or sooner if ordered
by the Senate, proceed to the consideration of such articles.

It can be confusing because the Clinton impeachment articles were delivered to the Senate on December 19 1998 but the swearing in ceremony for Rehnquist and the Senators wasn't until January 7. But that's because the Senate actually had adjourned for the year when the articles were delivered -- they were received by the Secretary of the Senate. They were not actually exhibited to the Senate by the House managers until the Senate was back in session.

Gov. Bill Weld, @GovBillWeld, 16minutes ago
Worth noting that the oath administered to our Senators by Chief Justice Roberts requires fealty to the "Constitution and laws.” It says nothing about loyalty to a political party...or to @realDonaldTrump.

We just want competence. Trump has covered up and withheld evidence that taxpayers paid for. This is a direct violation of the basis for the foundation of any republic as well as any democracy - that power is derived from the consent of the will of the governed. These are well established principles dating back to the political philosophers of the enlightenment and derived from Magna Carta. Trump has violated them all.
