Democrats plan major investments in state legislative races
Source: The Hill
A top Democratic group will spend as much as $50 million trying to win back state legislative seats this year, a record-breaking investment that reflects the urgency of a pending redistricting and reapportionment process that will determine control of Congress for the next decade.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) will target legislative seats in seven Republican-controlled states, where the party is within just a handful of seats of reclaiming control of one or both legislative chambers, said Jessica Post, the groups president. Most of the states on the legislative chessboard are also key to both parties paths to the White House.
We have this generational opportunity to change the composition of state legislatures while also building out this incredible infrastructure across the country to help the presidential campaign from the ground up, Post said.
Democrats need to pick up just five seats to win back the North Carolina state Senate, and six seats to reclaim control of the state House. In Pennsylvania, Democrats are four seats from taking back the state Senate, and nine seats away from a House majority. They need four seats to flip the Michigan state House and the Iowa state House, two to reclaim the Minnesota state Senate and nine more seats to win control of the Texas state House.

(57,102 posts)Reapportionment is the key to gerrymandering which is the key for a minority party to take over.
State legislatures do the reapportioning every 10 years.

Democrats also need to get involved in local races, as Republicans have. A few thousand dollars and some professional grooming can make a big difference in a County Board, School Board, or City Counsel race.

(2,227 posts)"herding cats" and "big tent" identifiers are coming back to haunt us.
I love cats, I AM A CAT MAN!! But being so independent of each other that collective effort can't be accomplished, is a glitch, not a feature. We need to change it to a feature by willful cooperation.
Having said THAT...
Big Tents are also great, but quite honestly, there are certain people and ideologies that I don't want anywhere NEAR my tent. Period. Non-starters. We need democratic candidates in EVERY precinct/district that reflects our core values, not candidates that are repub-lite because that is the only way to get elected.
We do need to concentrate on starting at the bottom of voter food chain (local offices, state legislatures - the gop did that 50 years ago and are now fully reaping the benefits, so we have a LOT of catching up to do), and make sure we have effective educational programs so that our truths can't be drowned out by lies, which is how works now. That should help us make sure we are running REAL democrats for offices, not watered down democrats who compromise on everything we stand for.
We have a huge task in front of us, but we can do it.
Today I am optimistic. Yesterday, not so much.
