GOP lawmaker apologizes for unfounded claim that Democrats are 'in love with terrorists'

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)The top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee apologized Friday after he made an unfounded claim that accused Democrats of being "in love with terrorists."

"Let me be clear, I do not believe Democrats are in love with terrorists, and I apologize for what I said earlier this week," Republican Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia tweeted.

Collins had made the incendiary remark in an interview with Fox News' Lou Dobbs in response to a question about Democrats' efforts to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in the aftermath of a US airstrike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.

During the interview, Collins went on to claim, also without evidence, that Democrats mourn Soleimani's death more than they do fallen US service members. No congressional Democrat has mourned Soleimani, whom US officials have blamed for the deaths of hundreds of Americans.

He should apologize on the same damn show he said it on to the same damn people that heard it. The people that watch fox and not the twitter world.

They do this consistently. They make this idiotic comments loudly on Fox, and then (sometimes) retract them quietly to the Washington Post or CNN, which no MAGAt will read or watch.

Definitely not good enough.

Trump and republicans have spread Russian propaganda for Putin, who IS a terrorist. Now where's his outrage? He's to much of a coward to stand up to them.

as a combat vet, I despise when Collins and his ilk are labeled war-hawks or hawkish. my gut reaction is always to incert what they are, as you noted, chicken-hawks.

the GOP is now unable to pretend it's not the party of Trump. It's easy to loath your run-of-the-mill-George Bush brand of conservative. But they had some redemptive quality about them.

if the GOP doesn't ditch Trump the older members of the GOP are gonna have a had time competing against the exhibitionist of the party like Collins, Jordan, Nunez, etc.

these people are playing politics like shock jocks, trying to outdo the others in the ratings and if you won't deliver the sound bits, then there's a Mat Gaetz that will primary against you. that's what the GOP wants to. it wants members that will entertain their constituents, that way the masses won't notice what they're doing in the dead of night, nor will they care to ask.

You're right about what the Republican Party has become. We the people are the only ones who can change that, by the choices we make when we vote. Unfortunately, half the country is going along with the Republicans.
