Pentagon launched airstrike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, Defense Secretary Mark Es
Source: WaPo
BAGHDAD A U.S. airstrike killed Iranian Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad late Thursday, the Pentagon said, a dramatic escalation of tensions between the two countries that could lead to widespread violence in the region and beyond.
Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said the Pentagon had taken decisive defensive action against Soleimani, the revered military figure who had close links to a network of armed groups backed by Iran across the Middle East and, according to the United States, bore responsibility for hundreds of American deaths.
Gen. Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region, Esper said in a statement. This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.
Earlier, Iraqi militia officials and the countrys state TV channel announced that Soleimani had been killed in an airstrike alongside a top Iraqi militia leader just outside the countrys main airport. The Iraqi, Jamal Jaafar Ibrahimi, who is better known by his nom de guerre, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, is closely associated with attacks against the United States dating to 1982.
On Jan. 1, the siege on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad appeared to come to an end after supporters of the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia retreated. (Liz Sly, Joyce Lee, Mustafa Salim/The Washington Post)
A video circulated by Shiite militia groups showed, accompanied by the sound of wailing, the crumpled wreckage of the vehicle in which Soleimani purportedly was traveling. A photograph claimed to show his bloodied, ash-covered hand wearing the same blood-red ring seen in earlier photos of him alive.
A U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the record, said the attack was conducted by a U.S. drone and struck a two-car convoy carrying Soleimani and others on an access road near Baghdad International Airport. At least half a dozen people were believed to have been killed.

People fall for it so easily. No wonder he is kicking a hornet's nest. It is just enough to get everyone to panic and forget all about all of the horrid stuff Trump is doing to people inside of America. Nope, can't criticize a president at war.

If he violated the 'standard' regarding assassination, that's enough for even McConnell to remove him from office, and claim 'patriotism' as a saving grace.
And if not, were in for ANOTHER Land War in Asia...
This time with iran and iran IS NOT IRAQ.
Trump will be removed from office, or this will define the next fifty years of american military and state dept policy..

(101,316 posts)They are on good terms - better, I suspect, even before this, than Iraq and the USA. Much better than the USA now, of course.
Many members of the Iraqi governments since the overthrow of Saddam were in exile in Iran during Saddam's time. The Shia majority in Iraq wants close ties with Shia Iran. Iran helped drive ISIS out of Iraqi cities like Mosul.
Since the Islamic State group (ISIS) took over large swathes of Iraq in 2014, Tehran and Baghdad have been locked in a necessary fight against this common enemy. Now, following the military phase of the campaign against ISIS in Iraq, and the recent Iraqi election, the sides are opening the next chapter in their relationship. However, this will not be an easy task, given that Iraq is caught in rising tension between Tehran and Washington.
...
Through this visit, Tehran has sent a clear political message to the US that, while American forces have the upper hand in Iraqs airspace, Iran is the major external player on the ground. The trip follows US President Donald Trumps unannounced visit to an airbase in Iraq last December, which raised many eyebrows for breaking protocol (as did Trumps subsequent remark that US troops ought to remain in Iraq to watch Iran). Unlike Trump, Rouhani was openly and formally hosted by the Iraqi government, meeting with an array of Iraqi factions and competing political leaders.
One of Rouhanis most significant meetings was with Iraqs highest religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani (who once rejected a meeting with former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), in Najaf. This meeting sent an important signal to Rouhanis domestic opponents, who have often been at odds with his government over its relatively moderate foreign policy proposals. Iranian conservative media outlets were quick to point out that Rouhanis trip to Iraq was possible due to the sacrifices of Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). This meeting also sent a message to the US, whose presidents have never been received by Sistani, that Iraq cannot be coerced to turn against Iran.

Soleimani was an enemy of the United States. Thats not a question.
The question is this - as reports suggest, did America just assassinate, without any congressional authorization, the second most powerful person in Iran, knowingly setting off a potential massive regional war?

(6,176 posts)Trump may have done this to short circuit the impeachment process. If Iran retaliates, and we end up in a war with them, McConnell can use this to justify rejecting the whole concept of a trial in the Senate.
The Democrats would be stuck with trying to move forward in the face of a wartime President who would say that Democrats are giving aid to Iran by pursuing impeachment.
The Republicans could essentially blow off the whole impeachment process.
Any possibility of a fair trial, or perhaps even one at all, could be dead.
Any way you look at it, it's a disaster for the Nation. I see this as a cynical move to trade U.S. lives for Trump's re-election.
It could end up with thousands of American Military personnel dead or wounded just to keep political power in the hands of the Republicans.
I hope I'm wrong.
