David Stern, the NBA commissioner who oversaw the sport's biggest stage for three decades, has died, the NBA announced Wednesday. He was 77.
Stern died as a result of the brain hemorrhage he suffered approximately three weeks ago. His wife, Dianne, and their family were with him at his bedside, the NBA said.
"For 22 years, I had a courtside seat to watch David in action. He was a mentor and one of my dearest friends," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "We spent countless hours in the office, at arenas and on planes wherever the game would take us. Like every NBA legend, David had extraordinary talents, but with him it was always about the fundamentals -- preparation, attention to detail, and hard work.

(6,110 posts)I saw the list of all well known/famous people who died in 2019.
Very scary that 90% were younger than me!
If I live another 10 years, I will be older than the whole list!
Now that is scary!

(65,168 posts)He's in the conversation, for sure.
Prior to NBA, he was a lawyer that did pro bono work on housing discrimination cases.
Then he took over a league that had 8 teams bordering on bankruptcy and whose finals games were tape delayed until 10:30 central time.
Now, every team is worth at least $1.8 billion, players are partners, not employees, and the league is the 2nd most followed sport in the world!
Right here in Chicago, Reinsdorf & his partners bought the Bulls for around $20 million. The team is worth at least $2.8 billion now. 140 fold increase in value in 40 years. And the Bulls don't have the highest rate of value increase.
He was good for the biz, good for player wealth, and good for fans. (Well, maybe except for ticket prices.)
Yeah, he's arguably the best sports commish ever.
