North Korea never halted efforts to build powerful new weapons, experts say

Source: Washington Post

Just before North Korea launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile in 2017, scientists strapped their newest rocket engine to a test stand to see how it would perform. The liquid-fueled engine burned successfully for 200 seconds and generated enough thrust to propel a warhead halfway around the world.

Two years later, on Dec. 13, a new missile engine was lit up on the same test stand while scientists watched. This time the burn lasted 400 seconds — almost seven minutes — according to an official statement.

For analysts who closely track such tests, the results were both startling and mystifying. North Korea’s last ICBM was powerful enough to reach the U.S. East Coast. Was this a new booster for the same ICBM? Or something different? No one knew, but experts fear that the world could soon find out.

“Seven minutes,” said one U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss North Korea’s capabilities, “is a long time.”

Kim Jong Un lets his people starve while he supports one of the largest active duty military forces on the planet. Eventually he's going to use it.

Thanks to briefings, other Presidents knew better than to grant one on one negotiations - knowing full well North Korea can’t be trusted.

it would not surprise me if it was Russian or Chinese built and operated nuclear weapons that were detonated that N. Korea was allowed to take credit for.
Why those two countries?
Because they both could use a useful distraction.
China could use one from its attempt to seize control over territory in the South China Sea and Russia could use one from things like its invasion of the Ukraine.

Russia and China especially since both border N Korea thus making transporting the materials far easier than anything from Iran.

It's a distraction for the US, as you rightly point out. Furthermore, it gives them something to talk about domestically in the sense of, "You think we're tough? Have you people looked across our border with North Korea?" China has an awful record on human rights, but North Korea is even worse than that.

And even further, if Kim's regime collapsed, there would be legit millions of desperate North Koreans attempting to flee into China to avoid the chaos. Once that dust settled, China would now have a unified Korea, a US ally, right in their back yard.

The same reasons apply, to a greater or lesser extent, for Russia as well.

They'll continue propping up Kim's regime just as long as it remains in their national interest to do so.

haven't heard anyone from the MSM talk about Kim not enriching uranium to weapons grade, maybe because he never stopped enriching uranium. Kim has probably enriched enough uranium since Trump became president for 2 or 3 nukes.
